Default Frost King Question

Thanks to all on this forum, I'm about to start the "frost king mod". However, I don't understand the following: stuffing wheelwells with R-13 insulation, frost king, (or anything else, for that matter). The minute you drive in rain, or even over a puddle, you'll be getting all the insulation wet, and it will stay wet. What am I missing here?

Good question. I've done the FRost King in the trunk area of my vert but want to do the wheel wells when I have the wheels off to do the brakes this summer.

You are correct. I would not use R-13 or any open cell foam for the wheel wells. All it will do os retain water and never dry out. JMHO

I was going to put mine in heavy duty garbage bags, squish all the air out and seal the bag. Not sure what everyone else does if there is a better way I'm all ears.

What about a dense, spray foam? (waterproof if possible) Or what about just yer basic black tar undercoating in these areas?

Ok, when you remove the fender well cover, you can clearly see where the water/dirt goes and what remains relativly untouched. WHAT you stuff with the R-13 is around your gas filler tube. There's a chamber that goes clear across the car and causes a lot of the resonation you hear. It acts as a sound chamber and really multiplies the exhaust and road noises. This is an area that doesn't get wet, and if it does get wet, you've got some bigger problems.
Also, i never really worried much about the Frost king getting wet, maybe i should have but, i lined the areas again that seemingly don't get wet with the FK and where there is obvious water i leave it.

I hope this helps if you have any questions i'd be more than happy to help out!

Never heard of using the R-13 insulation. Go here for all the detail and instructions you need: http://mikemercury.home.att.net/sound.htm

I have been saying the same thing, do not pack the wells with R-13 especially if you have a vert. The back two drains of the trunk lid go directly into this area. Now that said what I have done is encase the R-13 in plastic and shove it into the tunnels that go toward the front of the car. Then duck tape it just to make sure that it does not come out.

How would you feel about injecting some of that high-density foam from Home Depot into those areas? Is it worthless in terms of damping sound?
BTW, thanks for your info, Chris.

I removed the rear wheel tubs and packed the gas filler area with a non-fiberglass product (not the pink stuff) but the shredded material that is blown into attic joists, just because I didn't want to work with f/g. Plus it was only $3 a bale...and you only need about 1/1000 of the bale...so the rest went into the attic!

With the wheel tubs removed, you gain access to the outside of the thin composite material you just applied FK to from the inside. So I laid another layer of FK over the outside...two is better than one! I am not worried about the FK getting wet because it is covered by the wheel tub and is attached to the composite (non-rusting) material.

Am impressed by the quiet and agree with the experts, like E-T & Mike Mercury, who say doing the wheel tub areas finishes the job and significantly reduces the noise level.

Just be sure it's non expanding!!! I don't know how it would work for the sounds, but i wouldn't object to something as long as it is removable, and doesn't expand. The fiberglass insulation although it won't be fun, is reversible, if the stuf fyou're talking about expands or hardens too much might make for some serious problems down the road.
