I gotta tell you guys, I love dogs. I mean I REALLY love my dogs. So they go with me whenever they can. They love being in the car with the top off.
But you know what dogs REALLY like to do in cars? Sure you do!
They LOVE to have the window down and hang their head out. And when they do that, they grab hold of the top of the door with their little paw with CLAWS on them.
Anybody got a way to put some kind of protection on the door so Fido can stick his head out without scratching hell out of my door?

Sorry Jack - I REALLY love my dogs too, but they don't ride in the Vette. I've got a Border Collie/Austrailian Shepard mix and a Black Lab/Pit Bull mix - and both of these girls have an aversion to having their nails cut.. The first one is about 90lbs, and the other one is about 70lbs, and the front seat is no place for either of them.
Cleartastic from the weatherstripping down about half way on the door? Maybe painter's tape - you know the blue masking tape, shouldn't leave as big a mess as duct tape.
You know what they say - "If you can't fix it, Duct it!"
Probably depends on his size, but you can train him not to do that. I have 2 Rotties, 125 and a 100 pounder and they used to ride in my SL500 (one at a time) and never scratched the doors. I just had a towel for the seat and my boy would just lean over to catch some air.
Try a fender apron....you know the kind to put over your fender when you are working on the motor?...if you velcro it to the door panel and at the top without letting too much hang over the top to flap, just enough to protect...should be a good fix...
I take my dog in the vette all the time - top down or up. The trick is to put the dog in a seat belt strap which keeps them seated and not rubber necking down the road. You can purchase a quality seat belt strap for your dog at any Pet-Co store. Oh yeah...and keep a bath towel on the passenger seat at all times.
just be careful. you hit your brakes hard and that dog can and will go flying out of the car . My dog was in the back seat of my car and teh window was 1/2 up and he still flew out. Scariest moment of my life.

These doggie seat belts work well. too. One other thing, and I know it sounds goofy, but you can get little leather booties for its feet, which would protect the car's surfaces.

How about putting the window about half way up so your doggie can get just his head out the window or a bit lower so his paws rest on the top part of the window instead of the door?

Mutt Luks - we use them for our airedales when it gets cold.
PS - no matter how much we love them, they have never been in the Vette...
I throw a flame seat cover that I got at the auto parts store on the pass seat and I just leave the window up high enough so the cant get their paws outside to scratch the door. I throw a towel on the back area also. White hair is hard to get off black carpet.
We have a Standard poodle, 60 lbs, he loves to ride, he gets a sheep skin seat cover on the passenger seat, and a door cover on the door (try Auto Anything) it slides between the window and the door and hangs down the inside of the door panel to protect interior, he also wears his seat belt when in the front. However he has found that he prefers to sit in the back of the coupe. I use a moving blanket down to protect the seat and door sil when he goes in and out and during riding he lays down on the back on another moving blanket, looking between the seats, now the wife gets the sheep skin seat cover I bought him the hatch vents, so with the top off, the windows down and the hatch vented he gets plenty of air simulating his hanging head out the window, and the only car issue is a few nose marks on the inside of the hatch window.
Being a dog lover (have 3 myself) having the dogs face in the wind may allow dirt in the dogs eyes. (ever have that happen to you?). Anyway, you should have the dog in a doggie seat belt with his head inside the car. Sorry to be such a nag.
I'd get that pup some booties! Try some of that clear tape on the door and invest in a seat cover as well as as good vaccuum for the flying hair! Good luck!

I have two dogs- and I never thought to bring them along shot gun. I was worried about the aspect of doggie through the windshield until I read this. I will go pick one up for the summer top off weather!
