On another part of this forum a participant indicated that some 2001's have experienced excessive oil burning problems. As luck would have it I am looking at a 2001 for possible purchase.
Did all 2001's have this problem? If not all have this problem is there a way to identify which ones might be more susceptible to this? (Like early model runs, late model runs, etc.) Should I avoid purchasing a 2001 because of this problem?

Not that I am aware of.

No, not necessarily. Have a Carfax and/or a history run on the car to see what shows up. Chevy dealers along with a few members here on the Forum can run the car's history for you. Start a new post here in C5 General requesting a history on the car and include the VIN in your post. Hopefully, one of the members here who has this capability will see this and run a history for you. Also, try to talk with the previous owner(s) if possible. Good luck!
Well...
I have a 2001 coupe delivered Feb 14th 2001 and in 21k+ miles, I think I've added 2 quarts. Yes, there have been oil changes and the 2 quarts came in the break in mileage and soon thereafter, but none since then. So...in my experience, I have no oil burning problems, with a few runs down an 1/8 mile track & Atlanta Motor Speedway Tri-Oval under her belt. Good luck with the '01 and have fun with it if you get it.
P.S. Had the wheels off today cleaning them & saw a tag on the front brake line with a date of 1/17/01. Just verifying the delivery date.
Depends largely on driver habit. When I drive real agressive it'll eat a quart in under 500 miles. Drive sedate and normal and I don't see any use. Mine is under the consumption test now because I want the re-ring done under warranty.
It appears that all of the MY 2001 cars, and about the first month of MY 2002 cars, have the "problem". Those engines had a new "improved" ring design that didn't work out quite like planned.
It happens under a combination of high RPM and low power, like when driving around in a lower gear to keep your revs in the sweet spot of the power band. Above about 3200 RPM at light throttle, the oil ring loses its effectiveness and oil consumption goes way up.
The severity of the problem varies somewhat from one car to another, but driving techniques are the bigger factor. The auto tranny cars have fewer problems because most folks just let the trans pick the shift points, and it always shifts at fairly low RPM under light throttle. 6 speed guys tend to delay the shifts sometimes...
For my car with the automatic, I get 3000-4000 miles per quart in daily driving, and that will include the occasional full throttle blast and also some manuallky shifted high RPM/low power moments when I want max power available right now. When driving on a road course and trying to keep the engine at 3000-6000 RPM all the time, I'll burn about a half quart in one 30 minute session.
Before GM will do the fix, they require an oil consumption check and it's gota be pretty high. Something like one qt per 700 miles. Of course, I could easily burn that much oil if I wanted to...
For me, the risks of having the dealer tear the engine apart seemed greater than the hassle of using a little oil, so I never bothered to get it done. But this is the ultimate "YMMV" story.
It was mostly 6spd cars but why take a chance..Some auto owners have reported the problem as well....I didn't even consider an 01 when shopping for my C5 so I got a nice 99!!
I once had a low oil pressure warning come up and once I had a low oil warning come up. I added one quart of oil and then the dip stick was ok. My 2001 is at around 43k miles now and I've never since had such a problem
I have a 2001 coupe with 14000 miles on the clock. It was built Sept. 13, 2000. I change the oil each spring and have never had to add any oil. Mine is an auto and I never hold it in any gear above the automatic shift point. I understand that the oil users are cars that are run at high RPM under light load i.e., holding the engine at 3500 plus RPM on level road usually to hear the "pipes". Any engine will use oil if it is run in severe conditions such as drag racing, autoX, etc. Years ago, I had a 409 coupe that used a quart in 800 miles no matter how I drove it. GM said that that was not excessive for that engine.

I bought a 01 vert in 03 with 14000 miles with 6spd and have been driving it like I stole it since yes I do put oil in it between changes but WTF this is not my mothers car big deal
The service information can be found for the 2001 C5: Information on Engine Oil Consumption Guidelines #01-06-01-011 and Service Bulletin Document ID 785792. I brought a 2001 C5 and went through oil bad... this service bulliten caused GM to buy my C5 back. Hope this helps
The TSB for this issue is 01-06-01-023A and covers 99-02 Vettes, 99-01 Camaros and Firebirds.
It states oil consuption in 400-600 mile range as being excessive.
