I've heard them called rims since around the 70's when I was a kid
it seems the "wheels" elitism is a much newer trend

I was taught that rims are rims, tires are tires and wheels are rims and tires. Of course I was around ten at the time and the instructor was our next door, an avid shade tree mechanic.

I agree with you, but I gave up correcting people a long time ago. A "rim" is part of a wheel. On a 2 or 3 piece wheel, you have the center section, and the outer rim(s). On a one piece wheel, the rim is the outside edge of the wheel. Today, rim is the slang or urban word for wheel.
Oh, BTW, motors are electric, and engines run on some type of fuel...
