Default Rims VS: Wheels

I really hate it when people refer to wheels as 'rims'!

I'm afraid that with the increase in usage it will be one of those words that is added to Websters just because everyone uses it.

Anyone else have this pet peeve?!?

I've heard them called rims since around the 70's when I was a kid
it seems the "wheels" elitism is a much newer trend

I refer to them as either... I haven't really paid much attention to using one term exclusively. Sort of whatever comes out of my mouth at the time

As far as I understand it's not a new phrase...just seems more popular among the hip-hop crowd (which I guess is the source of your discontent)

I was taught that rims are rims, tires are tires and wheels are rims and tires. Of course I was around ten at the time and the instructor was our next door, an avid shade tree mechanic.

I agree with you, but I gave up correcting people a long time ago. A "rim" is part of a wheel. On a 2 or 3 piece wheel, you have the center section, and the outer rim(s). On a one piece wheel, the rim is the outside edge of the wheel. Today, rim is the slang or urban word for wheel.

Oh, BTW, motors are electric, and engines run on some type of fuel...
