My mostly stock 99 A4 has what i believe to be a 2.73 rear end. I am really interested in going to a higher rear end like a 3.42. A family friend has the exact same car and has burned through at least 3 rear ends when he went to a 3.73. He followed all the break in procedures and everytime the rear end would start to howl extremely loud. Is this a common occurence? I have searched on the board and havent heard of a lot of rear ends going out like this. I would like to do this mod but not if it is gonna be a headache. Any input please
3 rear ends? I never (knock on wood) lost a rear. I have beaten everything from Stangs to Grand Nationals and never blew a rear. So 3 is a bit extreme, IMHO

Who built your friend's 3.73 differentials?
Get yourself a brand new factory built 3.42 differential from one of the forum vendors and you should be OK.
