I found a 2001 silver vert with 3400 miles. The dealer wants 34000 for it. My concern is that wasn't there a ring problem with the 2001 models and with that low of miles, it probably hasn't shown up yet. How do you check for something like that? Is that price to high??
yes some 2001s have that problem, and no there is no way to predict it will happen. Checking the tailpipes (inside) for oil residue may be the only clue
Price does sound high, but surely that's just the asking price. Should come down quite a bit unless vettes are a hot commodity in your area. The gentleman I bought my 01 from said he did not have any oil usage when I asked him about it before I bought it. It only had 10,300 miles on it and he drove it rather easy from talking to him. After my first 800 miles or so, I was a qt low. I have had it in the upper rpm range several times since I had it. If I didn't want to feel any power I would have bought a Camry. (not). They say the 6 speeds are worse than auto's usually on the oil consumption. I am in the process of doing the oil consumption test for the General now as I have extended warranty. Still haven't decided yet if I want our local dealer to a ring job or not. I did talk to the mechanic that would be doing it and he has been with them for 34 years so that made me feel a little better. I'm not sure what percentage had this problem. I belive someone said something about condensation coming from the tailpipes on startup and maybe a puff of smoke when you kick it. I'm sure someone else can help you further.

The ring problem was mainly with the '01s, but some '00s like mine had it too. Mine did not show up until I had about 9000 miles on the car and had the rings replaced at about 11.5K miles. No way to tell if it will be one that is affected or not.
On the price, I would say that it is way high. I think you could get a very nice '01 vert for $28-29K (depending on your location).
Badbone...I am just north of Wheeling.
Thanks for all the valuable info...basically it sounds like its a crap shoot when you buy a vette. Most win, but some lose!!
