Default Run Flats Run

Decided to take my new coupe (250 miles) on a run from Denver to Colorado Springs this morning. Checked tire pressure all around at 30 and headed out. Got just past Castle Rock on I25 when the DIC chime went off and said LR was low (at 21psi) - I started looking for an offramp and by the time I got to the next ramp the DIC said the tire was flat. Looks like the tire failed - small linear crack between sidewall and tread just above the "G" in Eagle - air was coming out as fast as i could put it in. Found a local Chevy dealer, he sent me to Big O - no Eagles anywhere so I limped back to Denver found a Goodyear shop, they checked inventory in all their Denver-area stores - no F1's no Supercars - they'll have to wait until Monday to order. Good news - all the techno stuff worked as advertised, DIC said tire was flat and they ran flat for 40 miles at 55mph. Bad news - tires seem to be in scarce supply. I'd be nervous about taking a long road trip.

Your problem is one of the reasons I dumped my run flats. On a trip you rarely can find replacements. I carry a jack, low pressue/high volume inflator, best plug kit available with steel tools, breaker bar, lights, rags and hand cleaner.

So buy tires that are smoother, quieter and handle better than the run flats. No more bump steer. No matter what you do however, if you do not have a full size spare, everything else is a compromise.
