I was driving home from Biloxi, MS yesterday when all of the sudden my fuel guage dropped to empty. Had about half a tank when it just dropped. I pulled over to make sure I hadn't hit something or broke a fuel line or something. I didn't see any signs of a leak. I drove to a gas stations some 20 or so miles down the road, filled her up, again no leaks. When I cranked it the guage did its little start up number and went back to empty. As a I pulled out of the parking and back on to the highway, it just all of the sudden went back up to full. Has this happened to anyone else? Do I need to get a new guage or should I trust this one until it gives up for good?
Fuel gauge issues are common and not just with Corvettes. It has mostly to do with the current gasoline. You can try adding some Techron to your fuel and using only the best fuel, like Chevron Prem. If that doesn't solve your problem them the gauge itself may have issues.
You can get the Techron at wal-mart.....don't get it at the Chevron station/mart as it is twice as expensive. Gas with high-sulfur content makes the gages of some 'Vettes go nuts. always at half tank when it has happened to me also. This is actually a relatively minor problem. Hopefully it is not the gauge itself.
This is a very common Vette problem. Do a search and you'll find tons of threads on this.
I've had it happen to me. I've used Chevron 93, and added Techron. Then I had the sending unit replaced under extended warranty. So far so good but it's early.
Mine did it too. It just went to below empty for no reason....then came back to normal after a little while. It did this about 5-7 times total. Heres the funny part. I did nothing to the car after and it has not done it in 2 years now
