Entered my first Concours show this weekend mostly because I was curious what it was like. Bad idea!
I appreciate what it's all about but when someone is contorting themselves to point out a water spot down deep in the engine bay or a piece of lint on the visor I know it's not for me. I ended up with a score of 96.5 out of 100 which I guess isn't bad but I'll stick with the fun shows.
At fun shows the people are interested in looking at sports cars and the mods you done to improve it, most don't own vettes and really seem to appreciate them.
Yeah, it is all about cleanliness. It sounds to me like you did pretty well! They sure aren't for everyone. Enjoy the peoples choice shows. More down to earth.
I did 30 shows last year and plan about that many this year. I like the Hot/Street Rod shows. Most are active in childrens charities. If you take a peoples choise top 20/30 trophy from one of them you have done something (with a Vette) and they don't care much about a stone chip or lint. I've found them to be a very good crowd of folks.
Those shows are not for me as well, I can't clean all week and show on weekends. I respect the guys that can do that, but I bought my Vette to have fun not work.
I prefer to do charity stuff and fun shows as well. Mostly runs, I rather drive my Vette with a pack of other Vettes then just sit there and stare at them.
To see what i mean check out my photos from Saturday for the Kerbeck 2005 Atlantic City Charity Corvette Poker Run for the Chip Miller Foundation >
As much of a pain it was for you, it is equally as much of a pain for the judge.
I judged a concours show last year, it it was a pain. You've got 6-9 cars to look at and judge, and they're all much cleaner than when they came off the assembly line, but you've got to pick a winner. If it's a smudge here or there that's the difference, that's what you have to reflect on the scoresheet.
I agree with you though, I personally don't find the concours category nearly as fun as the fun show. I think that's what I'd stick to. But, hey, there are guys out there that really enjoy the challenge of getting their car spotless and competing in that class. I guess that's what makes the world go round.
I am right thtere with you - The queen and I spent over 10 hours cleaning our already immaculate garage queen only to get dinged a point for one dog hair on the lower door panel carpet - The funny thing is we do not have any pets We did well with 99/100 but it was not worth it. Now that we just go with the intent doing fun shows, we really enjoy it a lot more.
I did the NCCC show at Corvettes at Carlisle last year and I think they judge that show as tough as any in the country. Fortunately, I was lucky enough to win 1st place with a score of 99 out of 100. (the 1 point that I lost was for a speck of dust inside the passenger side vanity mirror )
I would say that that show probably took me AT LEAST 50 hours of preparation. I spent all of my time working on the car and no time at all enjoying the show.
Like I said, I did it once and I won, thankfully. Now there is no reason for me to do it again. I'll just stick with the fun shows.

Sounds like you were at the G-burg show.
They do a nice jib and that is one show were they have judges that are very good and well trained.
I typically score 100 almost everywhere...there I scored 99.5 last year but agree with what they found.
What clas did you enter?

Street shows are much more fun. My cars will never win anything, but who cares, I get to meet some great people. To me the people, and seeing some nice cars are what it's all about.
Yes, most definitely, "serious" shows are an animal unto themselves and one that appeals to a particular type person. They bore me to death, as do shows in general--but more so.
I've several past show winning cars and I've never shown any of them more than once, and then because of the incessant urging of others.
One seems to be a "show person" or not. Guess I'm just a driver, but one who wants to do so with show quality vehicles.
