Need more HELP with gear shifter ****! (Scroll to the bottom)
I'm going to install a new ****, and I was told that the old one unscrews normally.
When I try to turn it, it feels like the whole thing is going apart, so I'm afraid to force it... It just doesn't want to move an inch.

What do I do to solve this problem?
Thanks!

The stock shift **** is screw on / off, but you must first pop off the top plastic cover with the shift pattern on it and then remove the "demon" key ( a small slightly triangular metal pin that is pressed in to keep the **** straight). There are "how to" posts with pics that will help with the key removal. Good luck

Take 2 flat bladed screw drivers. You will also need a towel to protect the leather. At the same TIME place the screw drivers on either side of the metal wedge, after plastic top is removed. Gently push both screw drivers down at the same time and the metal plug will lift out very easily.
Real PITA job...it took some real muscle to get mine out. I also ended up ruining my old stock ****. That "demon key" is in there better with more torque that your lug nuts. It's ridiculous. I broke 2 screw drivers trying to do it. You must use sharp needle nose pliers and pull it out.
Come out easily? I could move a mountain with less effort. Mine snapped the lugs off either side of the pin and I had to saw the rear portion of the shifter **** away so I could knock the pin out. No loss as the Hurst **** is way better.
I put the new one on, and now I have another problem:
The stick is now sooo high it looks totally rediculous!
The only way I can fix it is to saw some of the metal stick coming up from the gearbox off...
Have any of you tried that? Any suggestions on what to do and what NOT to do?

Sorry to disagree but my 12 year old grandson did the 2 screwdriver procedure just last week.

Do a search on shortening the stock shifter. I cut about 1 inch off of mine which was about the max removal to still use the stock **** and demon key (without re-cutting the notch and adding threads). Since you're using an aftermarket ****, figure how much you can remove and still have enough lever left to properly mount your ****. Note that the lever tapers out the lower you get, so don't remove too much. Good luck!
