Ok, first some disclaimers.
I know there is an article on fixing this and I know how to use the search feature.
The article, IMHO does not address the true reason our seats rock. Why did the fix work for the man that wrote the article? I don't know. What I can tell you is that 1, the part he modifies is not the part that holds the seats position. And 2, a couple of dealership mechanics from another forum (yes, there are others out there) claim that the problem is in the actuator that tilts the seat.
My own playing with the seat has shown that when it rocks, the telescoping part of the actuator actually slips in and out. The supposed fix for this is to replace a bushing inside, which is made of plastic, with something better...like aluminum, steel, etc.
So....here is my question...which search could not answer.
Is there a year when the rocking seat was fixed? Please don't say 2005. If there is a year with seats that do not rock, do those seat rails have a different part number than the ones that do? If so, what is it?
I am hoping I can buy later model seat rails to fix my problem and not have the problem come back later.
Thanks to all that read this far and all who offer help.
Take care,
Dale
PS...I hope I did not sound too defensive, but I know this subject is VERY long in the tooth.
A well thought out post -- i agree, i dont want to go thru the grief of the project this seems to bubble up into , when a replacement of a couple bits could do the trick..

I was just about to search the forum for a solution to this rocking BS!! I'm trying to figure out why neither seat rocked when I took it for a test drive Wednesday and they do now. If someone finds a permanent fix it should be posted as a sticky for all to see. Since my seats are going to have to be recovered soon, I wonder how difficult it would be to install high end after market seats with manual adjustment. I was never a big fan of power seats anyway.
Anyone out there switch to aftermarket seats in a C5??
Guys,
my car is a 1999 model, so it is out of warranty. What makes me mad is that I can see from the service records the original owner took the car in to have this seat problem fixed. The part the dealer used to fix this problem was a problem part itself.
Do y'all think there is any possibility I could get the dealer to fix this again, under warranty, since the fix that was under warranty did not stick?
I had mine fixed back in 2000 when the car was new. The dealer explained to me the drive unit on the motor was too soft and needed a harder part. Since GM did the fix, I have moved up to 500 hp and I have not had any more rocking issues. If I recall, the it would have cost about 400 big ones if I had to pay for the fix.

Holy crap! There has got to be some kind of fix other than getting robbed for a poor engineering job on GM's ( or their supplier's ) part. I'm considering yanking my seats ( the leather and foam is crappy too! ) and putting in Corbeaus. The seats in the LT4 I just sold had 96k on them and still looked and felt good. The seats in my C5 look and feel awful after only 70k.
In the fix posted, the fix did take out the "rocking". I am not sure how to reply to your "What I can tell you is that 1, the part he modifies is not the part that holds the seats position." as the part the "spacers" go into does work between the upper track rail and the lower track rail. If there is "slack" between these 2 parts, your seat will "rock". Somewhere between 1999 and 2003, I feel the memory position of the seat was changed to not travel all the way to the rear stop. On my 2003, the memory seat position stops about 2" from the most rear position of the seat travel if done manually. This way the rubber spacer is not crushed in the holder over time. A "rocking seat" could be caused by another failure of a part such as the tilt palstic pieces. But usually the failure of one of these plastic holders is complete failure resulting in the seat not tilting at all. Two different problems.
