Default "Service ABS, active handling, and traction control"

When I left the garage last Wednesday (a pretty rainy day) with my 2001 Coupe (MN6, some 32000 miles) that I had bought 3 weeks ago, the DIC signaled that these three systems needed to be serviced. Stopping the engine and restarting it did not “solve” the problem. So I went to my dealership who contacted Warranty Direct where I had purchased an extended warranty. I learned that the break pressure modulator and the control module were malfunctioning – replacement cost some $3100.

Yesterday, a beautifully warm and dry day, the message disappeared and today (nice weather too) I picked up the car which is still fine. During spirited driving I could indeed verify that all three systems work fine (to my feeling). It looks to me as if the problem is rather due to bad electric connections than bad devices. Thus, when it gets moist, the DIC complains. Indeed, I had similar problems with my previous 1997 Coupe (A4, 120,000 miles), but with that car, switching off the engine cured the problem.

I find it odd that this system is malfunctioning in such a rather new car. Somehow I feel that it would be sufficient to clean, oil, and isolate the electrical connections against moisture. Sure, Warranty Direct pays the bill, but still, I do not want to waste their money.

Any experiences/opinions on this issue?

Thanks, Robert

It seems the Service traction control message is a popular one this week on the forum. Another forum member just posted in the tech forum concerning the same issue. He's still trying to isolate where the problem exists but from some of the responses it appears that the computer needs replacing. I sure hope I don't get this message... It looks costly to replace the computer. I'd definately check some connections and read some codes for yourself to maybe find your way around replacing computers. Thats what I plan on doing should I be greeted with this error. Darn JL4 option....

If I turn on my hazzard flasher while the car is running, I get those same messages. Turn it off and restart and all is well.

Sometime if you have the traction control button on and you exceeded the computers amount of tq it can understand it will light up all the DIC lights. I did this once when I shot n20. I turned the car off and it was ok and never came back. Just something to think about.

Default DIC ABS - Track Control - Serv Soon

According to my mechanic the sensors were dirty. The last time I had this problem, I had just washed the car and probably oversprayed tire cleaner on the brake system. I possibly reset it at least 7 times i( in a period of 3 weeks) before it completely went away. I hope it is just dirt for to fix it seems to be mighty expensive. But, who knows replacing those parts may not even solve the problem - at least for my car.

I think you have short somewhere in your hazards ... If they power is lost somewhere, it'll do that. I learned from a real long/bad experience.

Had the same problem with mine.
There is a thread that shows pictures of the grounding points. i'll see if I can find the link and put it on this thread, but I took apart, cleaned with electrical cleaner, and reinstalled G401 and G402 and I have not had a problem since.
I am in the process (bout 95% done) in finding, cleaning and resecuring all grounding points. Car runs better than when I picked it up.

Battery was probably run down from sitting too long. Weak battery will do it everytime.
