I got only one key & one fob with my recent 2002 purchase and want to have a second key made, I was going to go to my local dealer for the duplicate, how much do they charge and have any of you had problems with duplicates made by the dealer? Also I purchase 2 remote entrys (fob's) on ebay, when I program them do I need to do the 2 new ones plus the original one or can I just do the new ones?
Home Depots can't duplicate a key to work in your C5. There is a resistor chip in the key that must be matched. There are 15 possible resistors to choose. HD does not carry these blanks. As others have said: no need to go to a "stealer". Any good locksmith can read the chip resistance and cut a key for you. Mine cost $25 for everything. You can even read the resistance if you have a digital volt meter. Call around to your local locksmiths and ask if they read and cut the Chevrolet chip keys. They will know what you are talking about.

As for the Fobs, Make sure they are for your 02, not all the years interchange. You can program 3 remotes.
Good luck
There is a GM part number on the back of the R.F.A. (Remote Function Actuator - aka FOB) Just make sure the ones you bought on Ebay match yours exactly. Also - I believe in the later model cars like yours there is a FOB #1 and #2........
The instructions on how to program the FOBs is in the owner's manual and it's pretty easy.

I'd go back to the dealer and see if they will give you the second fob. It should have come with the extra anyway. Other than that, you can get the key made either at the dealer, a locksmith shop, etc. You just need to have the value of the resistance chip in the key. Plus you can program up to three fobs to the car.
Humm thats funny, I got a key from Home Depot in Saugus Mass, works fine in my car. He asked for my other key, and gave me back 2 in 2 mins. Must be a freak thing, I guess
I work for a Chevy dealer and my cost was $30.78 for an extra key for my 2000. My cost for an extra fob is around $78.00. I decided I could do without the extra fob.
A friend suggested that I have a key cut just for the door in case I locked my keys in the car & apparently for that you can use a Cavalier key blank, or a cheap one, anyhow. I decided I needed a key that would work in the door and the ignition, thus the $30.00 price tag.

Just curious, did the new kew have the resistor pellet on it?

I went to the dealer to get a duplicate key for my 2004. When they quoted the $49 price, I said forget it. At least they were kind enough to measure the resistor for me and let me know what key number to get. With that information, I ordered a blank key from Eckler's for $15. I took the blank to Lowes, they cut the blank for free. The guy that cut my key said they don't charge for cutting blank keys, just for purchasing blanks.
You guys were going to get charged for a 2nd??? I was the third owner and the previous owner lost the other. So basically I was a wicked pain in the a$$ and the dealer gave me a 2nd for free. It was either that or the sales manager was going to get a call the first time I got locked out.
BTW shouldn't you always get a second key especially if it is a dealer purchase on a used vehicle?? After spending that kind of coin you would think that they would def pinch on the dup.
Home depot 24.99 and it has the pellet, He had a box of around 200 keys. I did not ask how he got the pellet right, I got my slip, paid and drove away. When I called and asked they said they don't carry "special keys". I was walking down the isle and noticed the keys on the desk. I asked and I received.
Ace hardware down the street also sells GM "pellet" keys. I found that out after while buying some stuff.

WOW, that's a new one from Home Depot. None in my area offer this type of key. I even have trouble with HD stocking the right "blanks" for my house. Thanks for the detail. Maybe the HDs here in TX will soon get the expanded assortment.

I went to Autozone in Malden Mass today and not only do they carry the right keys, you can also get FOBs from them now. Any FOB for any factory alarm. Now how do you like those apples. Just kidding about the apples, they stock both keys and Fobs, check it out. Also no fee for programming.
