Living in New Mexico, I saw summer temps of 240+ last year. Dealing with stock intake, I haven't modified yet ( although thinking Blackwing).
I switched out in my '02 Camaro and it was fine. But, this is a different animal.
Thanks - and please go easy, I am learning :o
Install the 160 - your engine will be fine. You will also need to change when your fans switch on and off otherwise the thermo alone is not going to help a huge amount below highways speeds. Evil Twin had a massive well detailed write up over in the Tech section. Have a look - it's on the 1st page.
EG
p.s. I have the 160 on my 01 Coupe and have set the fans to come on at 185 and go off at 175. Works like a charm for me.

Questions, to change/alter the fans...do I need an editing program. If so, what do they run? All newbie questions, I realize
Thanks - I think...
Just kidding. I was a n00b 7 months ago and I learn something new from the great folks here every day.
Editing : not needed. What you need is a piece of hardware that monitors the temp and the fans and turns them on and off as needed. It is adjustable for your needs.
It was a complete compliment Really feel like I have come to know you guys. Great bunch on here.
I have 160 in the parts section for $30 (west coast corvette, never installed). If i just drop that in, I am better off than with the stock?
Then when I can, buy the monitoring stuff. Wife has mods on hold - little unexpected $3000+ owed in taxes...I have to lay low after the GHL exhaust bill that hit right before the tax scare

Drop in the 160 thermo, it will help a little in the New Mexico heat. I saw my temps drop from 192 to 172 (highway speeds) when I installed just the thermo and now it stays at 172-178 because I have the fan control as well. No need to sell it.
And thank you for the compliments - I just try in my feeble and ineffective way to inject a little levity and irreverance into this Forum.
35thanivss - Just wanted to say hey from a neighbor in AZ and say thanks for asking the question. I've been considering the 160 before it gets too hot here in the desert.
England - so I am good to just swap out the thermostats and worry about a fan controller and LS1 Edit later. I realize it won't be as efficient - but it will be better than where I am right now?
My mechanic said switching out without altering the computer will toss all kinds of error codes?

Get a new mechanic pronto - that's complete
And yes, you can swap it out, no worries. If you are very quick you should only lose about a pint of Dexcool. Just so you know, in case you end up having to flush the cooling system (I did because I'm Mr. Fumble Hands), the C5 takes 6 pints of GM Dexcool (orange) and 6 pints of water to fill it. It took some digging to find those figures so I thought I would tell you and save you the agro of finding it yourself.
Never ever use anything but Dexcool. That would be "bad"
The swap takes all of 5 minutes and is just 2 8mm bolts. Just disconnect the big hose on the thermo and use a couple of wire ties to keep it up high, that way you won't lose any fluid.Use antiseize on the bolts when you put them back. Then just take the bottom bolt out completely and put it aside - then take the top bolt out and swap it with the 160 unit very fast. If you happen to dump all your coolant, don't sweat it. Just drain from the bottom of the radiator, tighten everything up and refill as above.
