Well after much concern about messing more up than fixing, I decided to go for the recall. Took it to Bill Heard Friday and took several hours to take care of it. Now it has no more lock.Since I was advised from the forum that the A4 is a must to do, I have to agree. I only had it to lock twice, but thats enough. Didn't want to go to Bowling Green this week and have it to lock up. So far, no problems and no codes. Oh yea, the squeak was also fixed. They had to spray the rubber booth under the hood where the colum comes through. This may be helpful for those who also are plagued with this problem.
Just a question, and I may be premature and lacking info:
I'm rebuilding a 2001 w/ front end damage (minimal). I've got the electrical connections under the battery temporarily disconnected so I don't know if what I'm about to describe occurs when the vehicle is powered up, (or if powering up the vehicle even makes any difference). I'm basically wondering if what I'm about to describe indicates that the steering lock modification HAS already been done to my Vette:
I noticed that I am able to turn my steering wheel completely from wheel lock when turned to right to wheel lock turned to left WITHOUT the key being in the ignition, and WITHOUT the car being on. In other words, my steering column/steering wheel does not lock at all when the key is removed from the ignition.
Is this correct? Does this indicate the modification has been done so that my steering doesn't have the occassional locking problem I've heard about? Or, does this mean someone before me has "forced" the steering and broken/damaged something?
Sounds like your lock has been disabled or removed - you should be all set...

My 02 M6 has locked up twice. I just shake the sh*t out of the steering wheel and it unlocks. I am installing a CLB. No recall work for me. It just reprograms so that it won't lock while driving, correct? It does nothing for the actual locking pin?
All the recall does for MN-6 is reflash your computer so your feul shuts off should it lock up . Also if you have had edits done by a tuner they will be lost when the dealer flashes your computer. Install an after market clb and stay away from the dealer.

Auto's don't lock ... referring to 2001+
as it's been pointed out, after 2001 they didn't put the lock in.
Sorry 97-2000's

Thanks, Bill.
Since it is a 2001, if it's an auto it never had a locking column. If it's a manual, then it has been bypassed most likely with a CLB.
