Default Making your own mods? Ideas?

I have an idea for a simple but useful mod, which I think most of you guys would probably buy since it wouldn't be too expensive but its sorely lacking in the C5. How could I get it manufactured? I could probably make a prototype out of wood but would need someone to make a few small plastic bits for me. Heck, I'll even assemble them myself, I always liked assembling those plastic model cars as a kid, except when I'd get my fingers clued together.

How do you think I could get started? Are there plastic manufacturers that can you can place order for parts if you give them a template? Its just one of those Wednesday afternoon, "don't feel like working" ideas. What do you guys think?

As a longtime forum member, I'd try to keep the corvette tax to a minimum.

not sure exactly what you have in mind... but for starters, try making it out of something rather than plastic. just as a model.

good luck with whatever ideas you have! its always cool to see what people can come up with!

there are a few options out there depending on the size of the part.

I use to be a designer and can create 3d cad models for you, depending on how long it will take me, dont have alot of time.

Let me know, I can get it to you in a form at least you can email to manufacturers for quotes on.

Depending on how large the part is (you mentioned plastic), you could do this also:

1. get rapid prototypes made, these are machines that will "grow" the part. Think of it as a 3d printer. There are alot of materials it can do it in. Do a search on RP, Rapid Prototyping, SLA, etc.

2. I have a customer that can create short run real injection molded parts fairly cheap, really cheap compared to traditional injection molding.

3. If its something other than plastic, alot of machine shops will machine it for you for a nominal charge.

Let me know if you would like help with a model, I am willing to donate my time if not to complex or would like info on the injection molder.

Best Regards,

Mike

One of the specialties where I work is that we can make injection molded small parts for a pretty low initial cost. Depending on the complexity of the part, we can usually make a mold for around $1,000-$2,000. After the mold is made, we can make small quanities of the parts at reasonable prices.

If the product is a big success, you can then go somewhere else & have a fancy $50,000 mold made that will spit out thousands of parts for pennies apiece. Our ability lets people prototype or test market products without having to lay out the big $$ up front.
