I'd get rid of the entire assembly and buy Cibie E-spec (European Code) headlight assemblies. I think about $60 each or so. That's what I'm getting.
I want a better headlight, but I don't want to go through the hassle and expense of changing over to HID's. This seems about the best choice and I've had Cibie conversions before. Excellent product!
I went with Sylvania Silver Stars for the low and high bulbs, upgraded the fogs to 885 bulbs, and reaimed them (the fogs tend to come set low from the factory)
My upgrade came from Ecklers. I got the hyper blue bulbs, 80w low and 100w high beam. It was good to go from a 45mph low beam to a 95 mph low beam! I barely even use the high beams at all!

This worked for me as well; now the foglamps cast a nice swath of light that blends right into the area covered by the headlights. I have no night vision problems whatsoever now, and that's on a winding 2 lane road at 70 to 80 mph.
I would like to hear more info on the ability of the stock wiring to support the 80/100 watt combo, especially as I tend to pull the stalk back to illuminate both low and high beams when entering a blind right turn (as a warning to oncoming vehicles that can't see me yet to stay on their own side of the road)

Fog lights are supposed to be set low to shine UNDER the fog, but I wanted to SEE, so I raised mine too.
