I bought my 01 coupe second hand. Both the passenger and driver side door glass both have vertical scratches from apparent up and down motion.... What causes this? Anyway to polish out?
It is caused by dirt and sand in the weather stripping. Roll the window all the way down. Wrap a towel around a regular screwdriver and stick it between the two pieces of weather stripping and clean it out. This will stop the scratching on the glass.
Clean your wiper blades also, the dirty blade will do the same to the windshield.
That was a very common issue with the C4s. The C4 had two fabric coved window guides. Once the fabric wore out, it exposed the metal backing which produced vertical scratches like you described. Does anyone know if the C5s have the same setup?

Somewhere along the travel path of the window, it must be making contact with a metal piece. Perhaps you can take the door panel off, then try the window and see if you can see/hear where the contact is being made.
