Same thing happened to me. Reprogrammed it several times and it kept loosing its memory. Changed the battery, relearned it and it kept loosing its memory. Cleaned the ground on the front wheel well (can't remember if it was driver's or passenger's) and it has been working fine since (several months).

I'd try a new fob first and see if that cures your problem. If it continues to act up, it could be the receiver in the car. I had this happen on my '99 and the dealer had to replace the receiver - worked fine after that.
I've given up on mine. Sounds like it's unlocking the door, but it's not - have to use the key. This is an '02 - didn't have problems with the '01 or even the PKE on the '96.

A possibility is the battery loses contact when the fob is bumped. Pretty easy to do, even when in your pocket. Try gently prying up the battery contacts so they press harder on the battery. Worked for me - no problem in last 4 years.
Try monitoring your tire pressures (car has to be moving). It is the same receiver that gets the signal from your key fob transmitter. If the tire pressures read out and the key fob doesn't work, then the problem is with the key fob.
