I have the 305/35/18 Nitto extreme drag. They are great on the street, And at the track. I don't drive in rain often, but have successfully driven in hard rain at highway speeds a few times and never had hydroplaning problems. That should only be an issue once they are nearly worn out. I do have some wear on the rear fender area, but my car has a lot of higway miles (104k) and there was some wear to begin with. The paint on the nose, rockers, and wheel openings will wear over time and miles. The drag radials could speed the pocess up if you have a daily driver.. You can add the cleartastic guards when you get the tires if you are concerned.
I run Nitto 555r2's. They do pick up rocks and debris quite a bit, but no damage to report. These tires are 100% better than runflats in relation to road noise and traction. But don't expect them to last long thanks to their 100 Treadware Rating.
I'v had Nitto555II's on my Z since last August and wouldn't go back to the F1's for anything, you have to make up your mind what your using your Z for, these are not your every day mileage maker type tires, these are race tires for the street, they hook up and launch like a mad dog from a stop light and they grip like your on a rail in the corners. Ya, there real sticky and you pick up a little more crap from the road but not enough to bother, I don't have any paint nicks on the fenders if that was your concern. If you drive your Z with performance in mind you will love these tires.

I've had my Nitto 555R2's for about two months now. I think they're great for hooking up once they're warmed up, but if you're looking for a high milage tire, this isn't it. There's a trade off - you get either great handling and traction or high milage.
I assume the damage you are talking about is the tires blowing out, correct? I remember a while back that there were stories about Nitto 555R's having bad blowouts and tearing up wheelwells. I have been running 555R's for 5 years now. I have had 2 sets each in 3 different sizes and only had 1 set with a defect. The outer tread blocks starting loosing small chunks and cracking at the very edges. I took them to a Discount Tire store since I ordered them from thier online store. They told me I had to much torque for the tires. I just kinda laughed and said I wanted new ones. They took care of it and my new set has been fine since last summer. They are great in the rain as long as they still have over 1/2 tread left. Once you warm them up they hook well too, even with my 450lbft of rwt, which is apparently more than they can handle.
I am running 315/35-17 Nitto 555r extremes. They hook really good and are probably the best drag radial in the rain. They hook better than BFGs, last longer than them too (about 10k) and i have seen no damage to the tires, the wheels, or my car. I run them on my Z06 and used to run them on my trans am.
I think the damage he is referring to is all the stories of Grenaded Differentials, and smked Transmissions at the Track. If you have a High HP car, and are going to run DR's at the track, I would look into beefing up your driveline, with a better clutch, hardened output shafts, and Trans brace. Good luck to you!
4 months on the R2s with mostly aggressive driving and no problems or nicks yet. I agree with the comments above that this is an awesome tire that outperforms the GY F1 SC. It especially hooks like a sombtch in 1st and 2nd gear. What an improvement.
For the guy who asked about all the different Nittos:
Nitto extreme, 555 etc. - these are regular street tires with standard street compounds.
The 555R is a drag radial with a flexy sidewall and sticky compound. It is fully streetable and legal.
The 555R2 is their track tire meaning it has the same sticky compound as the R, but stiff sidewalls. It too is fully streetable and legal.
FYI, the Toyo Proxes RA-1 is made by the same company and is basically the same tire. The compound is a bit gummier and it is pricier, but the carcass is the same.
i had 555r's on a firebird. it was a monster that would anialate any peice of rubber i put on it. the 555r's were great. cold they don't grip well but once they warm up hold on. i didn't have any problems with them except they just didn't last long enough, but that's not what they are intended for. i did tear up part of my drivetrain with them however(i still don't know where second gear went to).
I've been running 305/35 18" 555RRs for about 4 months. Awesome dry weather traction tire. I don't drive the car much in the rain, but I have on one or two occasions. They worked fine. As far as debris and damage, I haven't noticed any ill effects.
If you want to drag race, just belly up and get the CCW et street/skinny combo. They'll work much more consistently than a DR and in all honesty, they're easier on the driveline and differential than a stiff wall DR that happens to grab really hard that one fateful time: KABOOM goes the rear.
