Default Door popping

After driving over all those damn rough roads in Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee last weekend, my baby has developed a "pop" when I open the driver's door all the way and then close it. It "pops" just when I start to close it. It sounds like something is just barely catching inside. Sounds like a car that's been wrecked and the door isn't adjusted correctly. Anybody know what to adjust or where to look for the problem? I can't even figure out where it's catching.

Jack,

Without even looking at it, I would suggest checking the hinges. You could have a worn out bushing, loose hinge or broken spring. (I'm going with the spring myself)

Open the door all the way and watch closely at the hinges.

Also, close the door slowly until it almost latches. You will "feel" if the door has dropped due to a bushing because the door latch will "bump" into the striker before the door actually latches. You will physically see the door move up a hair (or down) if it's misadjusted (or again, the bushes are worn.. the door will have dropped a hair)

The other way to check the same thing is to close the door all the way. Open it enough to let the latch release. See if the door drop just a hair as the latch releases...

OR

Open the door about 5 inches. Grab the rear of the door and see if you can move it up and down. Definite sign the bushings are spent.

I'm still going the broken spring for the popping sound though.

HTH's,

mark

Mark, it doesn't do it every single time and if I had to put any money on it, I'd say that it was coming from the top rather than the bottom. Does that help narrow it down any? Loose hinge sounds logical to me. Baby got beat up pretty bad on those roads in Alabama.

Mine does the same thing. When I took it to the dealership for service, those idiots put some type of white creamy lube on every hinge. Needless to say it didnt do anything but **** me off.

Thanks. If I couldn't find someone to help, that was my next move. Now I know better.

Spray some teflon on the hinge. My car did the same thing a couple of years ago. A little teflon, not WD40, should do the trick.

Got a can downstairs. Can't hurt.

But I think Mike's got the problem down. I think there's something out of whack.

Jack,

Now that I think about it. I know what it is. The door hinge has a rod that is curved. It's what "stops" the door at certain points. (I think there are 3 spots on it)

Anyway, I promise that right as the second hump on the curved piece is about to roll on the hinge, it's dry and it's snapping onto the metal.

These guys are right. Get some lube and spray it.

My Yukon does it all the time. I have to keep lubing it. Get some white grease if possible.. that way it won't run.

Hope that helps...

Mark

PS. Sorry for the complicated first response. I misunderstood what kind of "popping" you were talking about.
