My 2001 coupe locked up last year. I had the dealer service it.
I believe mine needed a reprogram of the eprom, but I was able to retract the lock by removing the bottom cover below the steering wheel and tap on the lock area, which allowed to drive the car to the shop.

My guess it that you only hear from those who have had the problem. Probably fairly difficult to determine the number of failures vs. all C5 owners. My 2 cents. Zuti
Looking at the results of your poll so far, this doesn't appear to be as big of an issue as one would think by reading all the post on the CF about it.
The previous owner of my 98 C5 A4 had his local dealer do the recall, but they didn't actually do it. When I got the car, I started getting the message "PULL KEY - WAIT 10 SECONDS" which has to do with the colum lock problem. I took it down to my local dealer and they verified that the other dealer had not done the work, even though they said they had. My dealer did the recall and no more problems.
Mine locked yesterday at work. Unfortunately, I removed the "eric column unlocker kit" just the night before cause I'm building my 6 15" woofered box. Just figures.
Fortunately, I walked down to the show car install bay, got the tools to remove the steering column cover, and unlocked the damn thing myself. This weekend I might pull the steering wheel and try to permanently disable the pin (with hacksaw or dremel)...(I really dont want to get a CLB- incase it makes my BCM blow up).
My '99 FRT had to be fixed TWICE. Column locked before the recall....had it fixed.....locked again 3 days after the recall was announced. When I got the recall notice, I thought to myself well, that's one thing I've already taken care of. Three days later....whammo. Didn't occur to me that they used the old version of the stock part to fix it the first time.
I have a '02 with 7000 miles on it, bought it about a 1 1/2 years ago with 3500 miles on it. Never had a problem. But I'm not sure what happens. Pleas help.
