Default exhaust questions

How much hp do people actually gain with exhaust? I was looking under the car trying to decide what to do and it looked like the stock piping was pretty decent size. Is there any performance gain from a catback or is it purely sound? what gain do people notice running catless vs not? What is the most gain that can be made on a NA motor with longtubes, offroad x, and catback?

thanks
Ben

Depends on how you define "exhaust"

Headers back
Cats back
After H pipe back
Muffler Only

The "advertised" HP is FOS IMHO

If you're speaking strickly about the catback the performance gain is minimal but the sound should improve greatly depending on which one you go with. An X-pipe will help it flow better, again performance gain is minimal. Now when you add a set of LT Headers you can get some real gains there. Someone with better knowledge on this will chime in.

that is what i figured. i though a catback and x-would add maybe 5-10 hp but with a nice set of longtubes maybe 25-35. if anyone has better info, please let me know. thanks guys

By the time you get that far back, it doesn't really matter anymore. If you had ceramic coated header and x-pipe, then there'd probably be enough heat and velocity left in the system for the catback to make a difference tho.
