Default Borla Straight pipes???

I'm looking at purchasing some for my fairly stock 99 A4. What kind of sound do these have as far as loudness. Im only 22 so i dont really mind a loud throaty sound, but i also don't need trouble with cops. Those of you who have this set up do you get pulled over at all? Is it street legal as it appears to have no mufflers? Any input please

Default Straights

they are street legal,at least i've never been told otherwise.never been pulled over, either!as far as sound, you'll love it!i'm not 22,and i dig the loud stuff!tried borla stingers, had corsa on when i got the car,and nothing compares with the straight pipes for aggressive, throaty, rumble sound!!!even at startup,it growls!only reason i'm selling mine is just the need to try something different for a while, and i already know that somewhere down the line,i'm going back to straight pipes!!!

I know you guys, and some gals, like all that noise....it sounds good to me too for a few seconds. BUT, I like to talk, to listen to music and not have to yell at the top of my voice when I want to talk. It's just a matter of preference.....I prefer a nice stock rumble and not being hearing impaired after a long ride. Enjoy that wonderful car!

hey there .. i'm 19, i've got the borla straight son my '03 and they're great if you have a stock exhaust, if you do for instance LT's then it gets to be a bit loud.

i've never had any troubles with the cops regardin the exhaust (knocks wood)

here's a few clips:

http://www.safeguardone.com/kyle/car...orla-flyby.wmv
http://www.safeguardone.com/kyle/car...steps away.wmv

they sound a bit like a truck at idle, other than that they soudn great and with a 6spd .. they're not overly loud even while cruisin the highway.

edit: oh btw .. its my dd and i used it for 80 mile drives every other day .. and was always fine.

I Love mine, but I'm just wondering why they quiet down when the exhaust warms up shortly after startup? Kyle does yours do that too?

it has to do with the cats not being warmed up yet .. the sound of them starting up would be a good idea of how they would sound w/o cats.

i just bought some borla straght pipes and have a pair of FLP high flow cats laying around as well. Is it worth installing the hi flows? Is there any difference of sound with the borla straght pipes? any HP gain? will it set off any o2 sensors if i put them in?

hp gains .. well i dunno, i would imagine some gain but there are definitely some weight advantages to it .. stock mine ran a 13.7 @ 105 mph 2.1 '60, after this and a K&N filter I had it down to 13.01 @ 111 mph with a 2.2 '60 .. i'd say the weight had more to do with than anything else.

and the pipes wont set off your 02 sensors, i dont know why you'd bother installing the high flowing cats unless you're planning on a LT install ..

It will sound real cool for at least an hour.

I have had both the Borla Straights and the Stingers. I started with the straights that came on the car. They may have been okay with a stock system but I have LT’s and no cats so the straights were loud beyond purpose. I could have sold you mine.

The Stingers look identical to the straights, are still an announcement but they do allow for some loud conversation with far less resonance. You might be ok with the straights as long as your cats are on. High flow cats will be louder. Don’t expect relevant power gains, just weight loss.

Have fun at the underpasses and tunnels.

I run the straight pipes with no cats longtubes and the g5x3 cam, and people can here me comin for like a mile away. the car drones pretty bad in sixth gear under 70 mph or under 1500rpm or so.
even though my car drones and resonates i love the sound it makes at idle and WOT. believe me when i punch it and take it through 6500 rpm it screams, and thats what I like about it.

all depends on what you want

good luck

I had just the straight pipes on without the resonator and I loved them, it was them or the SLP LOUDMOUTHS, but the straight pipes were cheaper and the sound is close. I am 32 and if I did it all over again, I would go with the straight pipes and the resonator (XR-1 racing system). I think you are going to enjoy the fun, sound and yes, there is a little gain over the stock. I had MAGNAFLOW mufflers on prior and I noticed a gain over them, so you should notice a nice little gain over the stock exhaust.

I live in HAWAII and they are really strick on the noise factor and I have yet to be pulled over for exhaust. WOT it is a nice roar and at cruise I can talk to my wife, buddy or listen to the radio. I don't recommend opening it up when you are downtown and between buildings! LOL! That will create some noise that could attract the LAW.

Enjoy, have fun and keep it at WOT!

After looking at the feedback i think i am going to put the straight pipes and drive for a little bit before i decide to put on the high flows or not. If anyone wants the FLP high flows let me know.

I had some SLP loudmouths on my car but I didnt really like all the noise. I would go with another exhaust system and save your ears so they still function later on in life. The happiest days of your life will be the day you put them on and the day you take them back off.
