Not sure if this is the right section, but feel i will get more input here.
What is the top speed for the coupe? Z06? vert? I have read in the mags 175 for the coupe....170 for the Z06
My real question has to do w/ my vert and the extra horsepower I'm making..... I've been up to 150 mph w/ the top down, 165 mph w/ the top up..... I know it would be a good idea to add some down force to the vette to keep it planted, but at what speed should I start worrying about it? I don't plan on going 200 mph, but don't want to go airborne at 180 either.....

What do you guys think?

Send a PM to "Lefteye" - he has detailed info on what you need to do to keep your Vette planted above 150 (hood vent, wing etc.)
Gearing is a factor on top speed runs. I think 175 mph was achieved in the coupe running a 2.73 gear. 3.15's run 165 max I think. I've had mine up to 145mph on a track but I would love to get it up to its max. With the added HP I've got, lighter weight and my 3.15 gears, my rough estimate would be somewhere in the 170's with no headwind.
I have an 03 coupe with A4 and 3:15 gears. Had it up to 138 mph @ 4,000rpm for a few seconds; still felt real strong, like it had a ways to go. It also felt firmly planted on the road.
If I can find the right stretch of road where I can see a looooonnnngggg way I would try to run it out to top end. I worry that when your going that fast, there is not much time to react to something unexpected ahead.
Does anyone think the car would actually become airborne? There are no warnings from Chevy about that in the manuals.
I have a 00' coupe. I have been known to reach top speads of around 75mph. I've even ran a 0-60 in 6.542 secs. All that with just a few bolt-ons.
Well if you're only reaching a top speed of 75mph and 0-60 in 6.52, you don't have a 2000 Corvette. The 2000 Corvette Coupe has been tested to 176 and 0-60 in 4.8 secs.
have a 99 frc stock except vararam have seen a touch over 170 still felt like it had a very little bit left 180 maybe in good conditions
I had my 2000 frc just over 170, bone stock in 5th gear and it had another 300 rpms before redline and was still pulling hard. it did not feel unstable either.
I also had a 97 coupe up around 155 mph on nitrous one time before running out of room and it felt very stable as well and it was still pulling very hard.
If you have low drag and can keep the car on the ground, you do not need as much horsepower.
But horsepower alone can get you above 200mph.
True, but the HP required to go faster is not a linear function, it becomes more exponential. For example, just to go 10 more MPH from 180 to 190 MPH top speed takes a lot more HP then it would from 160 to 170 lets say.
175 mph should be easily done with a stock C5. I've had mine to 160 mph before I ran out of room, and my coupe was still pulling hard, with the PRT's screamin'! It's a matter of being willing to do it, and having the ***** to hang on for the ride!! On that note, be safe out there. At these speeds in an uncontrolled environment, you are at a point of no return should anything happen.

I have had the vert up to 165+ mph w/ the top up and it was pulling strong....i just ran out of room.
That's alot of rwhp. My guess would be you could see close to 200 mph under the right conditions. The lingenfelter Twin Turbo FRC (pulling 1,100 rwhp ) topped out at 230 mph. The hood was actually flexing up from the air pressure!! Here's the article from Lingenfelters website (its in a pdf format):
177 MPH so far with MCM hood and small rear spoiler. It was very stable compared to 174 MPH with stock hood. which felt light at the front end. I haven't had the opportunity to check the top speed yet on the German Autobahn.
