Default Why Is Duct Tape Silver?

I have always wondered about this.

This morning as I awoke the answer came to me.

Before:

After:

Of course, Duct Tape is for temporary repairs to Silver Vettes. It has been embarrassing to ride around with the innards of my front fender hanging out so until Monday when I drop the car off at the shop, this will have to do.

I spent this morning at the South Carolina Welcome Center which hosted a "Grits Stop" as a publicity stunt for a number of area attractions including the SC Railroad Museum.

There were a number of interesting visitors and I asked some of them to attempt to heal the car for me but they were all unsuccessful.

The first guy looked like a good prospect:

I found a cute girl but she couldn't do it either:

So I found an even cuter girl, a real Babe actually, but she couldn't do it either:

And as a last resort, I asked the cow to kick the tires but that didn't work either:

But if all goes well, one week from today Carol and I will be part of the Queen City corvette Club's caravan to St Augustine, FL in my new Tiger Shark C-5.

We can't wait!

Happy motoring to all!

Not a bad repair job as a temporary measure. Hope you get it fixed up soon.

Wow ... when I first saw the pix ... I thought the first guy was you.
Did you ask him why he couldn't just "fix" your bumper or was that too easy after turning water into wine?
As for the rest, except for the brunette ... I'm scared.

Btw, good luck on your new front end. I'm off to the body shop to check on progress as well.

In Viet Nam we had the metal backed 100 MPH Speed tape. Held F4's and Thuds together really well.

Yup, nothing like 100mph tape and 550 cord. I've held HMMV's together, labeled broken equipment, and tied up POW's with the stuff. The tape usually costs around $30 a roll!!!

Is it possible to remove the fendor liner and tape it from the other side? Then all you'd see are the cracks.

I did that once on a Fiero. There was a meandering crack in the rear bumper skin. I removed the skin and bonded a flexible plastic sheet to the opposite side. Minor touch-up paint in the crack itself to match. It was hardly noticable when I got done.

I am not suggesting that is adequate for your Corvette. Just less gaudy until final repairs are made.

Ron,

The inner pieces are all bent and ripped up too. I cut pieces away with tin snips this morning to get it to lay more or less flat.

It is only two more days so I can live with it a bit.

Maybe drive only at night or something.

Besides, I would feel guilty asking my insurance company to pay for a rental car when I really didn't need it. It is going to be bad enough driving a rental next week.

So as to answer your question. The original color was Army green and not silver.

It's original use was to keep moisture out of the ammunition cases. Because it was waterproof, soldiers referred to the tape as "duck tape." The tape was made using cotton duck, so the name "stuck." The military discovered it was very versatile and used it to fix their guns, jeeps, aircraft, and other items.

After WWII, duct tape was used in the booming housing industry to connect heating and air conditioning duct work together. Soon, the color was changed from Army green to silver to match the ductwork and people started to refer to duck tape as "silver tape" or "duct tape."

WOW, that's interesting!! It's great to know all these "Useless Facts of Military History". Personally, I thought they made the tape out of "DUCKS" and that's how they got it's name...boy was I wrong.

My Grandfather always called it "duck tape"....and I grew up calling it that too until people started laughing at me. Well...I can proudly use "duck tape" again and have a story to back me up
