Hi fellow members, I put my Vette for sale on autotrader.com last week (yes, I know...it's sad to see my baby gone...but due to divorce). Anyway, there's this "potential" buyer from Canada...willing to buy my car for $26.5K. Anyway, this is his email. Pls take a took to see if it's a scam or it's real. Thank you in advance.
Greetings.......
After forwarding your vehicle details to my client he has asked that you endeavour to consider the vehicle as sold now. I will be contacting him as soon as possible before he leaves the country to Brussels on a National assignment trip. He is a NATO official and represents Canada. The vehicle is meant to be shipped to Canada within three weeks due to the urgent use.He was also more concerned about the engine hopes its in good condition.I will be making arrangements for test driving and Inspection with my agent who is presently in USA.
I will keep you posted on further arrangement and payment as well.
wow, if it's tim roth the actor, that'd be cool...but it's not!!
considering I just looked up that address...it's industrial...and there's only 4 tim roths in ontario..all of which are 100mile commutes from that address...I'd stay away...

I'm trying to sell my jeep right now and have it on Autotrader. I've had 2 responses exactly like the one you have. I told them I'd have to wait till the check clears the bank before any other steps are taken. Never hear back from them.

Also, when you receive the check and attempt to cash it.....advise the bank first that the check might be part of a scam....... and explain how and why you are in possession of the check....if not while you are attempting to cash the check the "boys in blue" might show up and arrest you for cashing a Fraudulent Check, which is a Felony....
When I put my 1989 GTA up for sale on the web, I got two emails both talking about the same thing yours does. Only the guys clients were from Europe. They said basically the same thing your "offer" did, only the "buyer" facts were a little different.
Apparently many folks get this email.
HUMMMMMMMM. Take check to Bank and cash it before you release car. End of story.
No it's not the end of the story. The check will clear. Then when the actual holder of that account finds out that somebody spent their money, the U.S. Bank will have to refund it. Then the come after the one that made the deposit for retribution ... in which case the seller is literally screwed Big-Time!
Blow it off, it's definitely a scam!!!

He is correct! This is a scam. I deal with these all the time. The check will probably be for more than the purchase amount and the subject will request that you send him back the difference via Western Union. This is the real reason for the scam, to get you to send him money.
Thanks for all the advices. Personally, I thought it was a scam also, but I have never sell my car on the internet before and didn't know what to think of. You guys were all correct about a big check and etc, etc.Anyway, here is a second email from him, pls take a look. Thanks.
DEAR,
I have forwarded your vehicle information to my client and after evaluation and due to time constraint on the fact that we are runningshort of time. I'm delighted to tell you that my client has recommended your vehicle, with full interest and he has instructed me to carry on with his
transaction, Hope the eugine and body is in perfect condition? You asked a question saying you dont know me.Actually i am so sorry for such an urgent purchase but due to the fact that we are running out of time on this purchase of the vehicle for an upcoming Birthday celebration of my client's wife.I was wondering if i can get to call you so that we can at least speak about this. But i look forward to getting a # where i can reach you. However He also instructed me to inform you that payment will get to you in a cashier check of $34,000 which is a refund payment of a cancelled order earlier made by my client. Due to company policy this check has to be made out in this amount to you, Because company policy only allows a refund payment on one cashier cheque.
So you are required to deduct the cost of your vehicle ( car) $26500 when payment gets to you and refund balance $7,500 to the Agent ( our shipper ) for him to be able to offset shipping & tax charges, and other cosmetic repair costs.
After payment has reached you and balance sent to shipper, the shipper's agent will come for inspection, pick up (of vehicle & signing of title papers), make some cosmetic touches and drive to a prepaid shipper to be shipped to my customer. Please confirm this and forward the following informations;
Names:
Address:
Phone number:
For payment to be made and send to you as soon as possible.
Your honesty, understanding and co-operation will be highly
appreciated.

Oh, and then when I got the second email from them talking about the extra large check and how I'd have to send him the money, I told him that he must have been reading my mind because after adding in my clients fees, etc, the price of my jeep ended up being 34,000. Never heard back from them. lol
