interior lights????

interior lights????
ok.... i noticed something a little wierd.... when i shut off my car,pull the key from the ignition, get out and close the door all the interior lights go out.....if i open the door and close it again with out putting the key back in the ignition (like if i forgot something in the car) the interior lights will stay on when i close the door...??? unless i lock it 
am i missing something...anyone know why???
