Anyone else have their Amp(s) installed down inside the small storage compartment in the back and experiencing overheating issues. According to JBL, the amps that I have are set so that they go into protect mode at 160 degrees and I guess that compartment is just TOO close to the exhaust. There are fans blowing on the Amps but even driving around on a cool evening they'll shut off after about an hour of driving. The audio shop is working on a solution but curious to see if anyone else has experienced this problem and what they did to resolve it.
It is not the exhaust from the car causing the problem. The impendance might be too low for the amps....that will cause over heating for certain. Next is the power and ground...those have to be adequate. But most of all ventilation. What I would do....have done dozens of times......is use at least two fans for each compartment. Use them in a push pull configuration. Meaning one fan blows fresh air into the compartment while the other pulls the hot air out. I would remove the covering on the factory covers, cut holes in the covers, mount the fans, and then recover them in a fabric that allows air flow. A crafty installer can do this and keep the covers looking factory while also hiding the fans underneath. That should solve your problem provide the other parameters are ok....impedance power and ground.
Well the problem is definately heat related, and it's not due to the outside temperature. What you suggested is pretty much what AZ Auto Werks is going to try. There are already fans blowing ON the amp heat sinks but they are going to build fans INTO the heat sinks so that one blows in air and the other sucks it out. Hopefully that works.
I am also having problems. My planet Audio amp is in the center compartment and after an hour of running, eben on a winter day, it will cut on and off, as the thermal breaker kicks on and off. I want to keep the cover, to allow me to stack luggage when i travel.
I'll be waching for any rock solid suggestions, on types of fans, and how and where to mount.
waymirec....please let me know how it works out for you.
boatboatboat....what color is your interior? I have a few spare center covers here in gray. I would be happy to build you a circulation system that should solve your heat problem, retain factory apperance, and be strong enough to put stuff on. PM me if you are interested.
