Default Air Dam

Please lend me your insight...

What exactly does does the air dam do? Is it necessary? It is annoying that it hangs so low and scrapes going up any kind of incline.

I have not seen one on any other sports car, so why is it on the vette?

It directs air for cooling, the engine intake and helps with the aerodynamics. It is engineered to scrape, that is normal, this is stated in your owners manual.

I believe it routes air up into the engine area for cooling purposes. It's also one of several aerodynamic design pieces for a better coefficient of drag. And THAT equals faster times on the road and track.

Don't take it off as it does direct air up into the radiator.
Easily replaceable when it wears out, but that will take a while.

After I lowered my car about and inch I would scrape all the time. Even knowing the air dam was engineered to take the abuse I'd still cring and hit the brakes when I scraped.

So, I trimmed the air dam and inch. No more scraping or cringing and no overheating or other problems as a result.

The dam easily unbolts. Mark it off with 1" masking tape and use a dremel to cut it. Can be done inside of 30 minutes.

well, i wondered about this as well, because my buddy lowered his and the thing will scrape up road kill, and he said the same thing that everybody else has said on here about cooling the radiator, however, i bought a 99 frc 3 weeks ago which has had the thing removed.... so.. i havent had any problems with overheating and it runs a pretty solid 194 deg., but i believe the guy had the fan set to run non stop from 192deg. however, i believe i'm gonna replace it though because it looks funny with out it! its like a huge gap toothed girl or something. and the constantly running fan deal is a little annoying as well. your choice, also, mine is indeed lowered
