My '04 Z has started squealing. It sounds like fan belt squeal and gets worse as the rpms increase. The belt was changed 4k miles ago when the dealer fixed the oil pump. It sounds like it's coming from the belt tensioner. Other than the squeal, everything appears to be fine. Anyone else had this issue? Hate to take it to the dealer if it's just a minor thing that I may be able to correct myself. Thoughts? opinions?

When I got home, I took a good look at the area the squeak is coming from. The AC belt has slipped and is riding on the edge of one of the pulleys. It's also not seated right around the balancer. Guess it's off to the dealer to reset it.

You sound like your probably capable of fixing it yourself, give it a go.

Apparantly you don't know me very well. Actually that belt is tough to get at from up top. At least for me it is. I took it to the dealer and the service writer thinks it's the water pump bearing. I was hoping it wasn't the water pump. We'll see what the dealer finds out. If it is the water pump, that would be a bad water pump and a bad oil pump within the first 11k miles on an '04. No wonder this car was painted yellow.
After owning 5 Vettes, you would think I would be used to this.
Well, no word from the dealer and it's almost closing time. They had my car for almost a month last Dec to fix an oil pump. They've had the car all day today and haven't even looked at it. Time to get it and take it someplace that will give more than lip service. I've had three other Vettes that needed water pumps and each time the dealer I took them to diagnosed and fixed the car the same day.
I gave this dealer a second chance today. I see that was a mistake.
No, it wasn't upfront. I went down to get the car and, of course, the adjuster said, "I was just about to call you". Sure you were. They took a quick look at it and they think it's a loose balancer. Tomorrow they want to determine why it came loose. I reminded them that they removed it last Dec when the replaced the oil pump. At the time I asked them if they replaced the balancer and they said they reinstalled the old one. I've been told that balancers should be replaced on these cars once removed because they can loosen up. I told them that and they reassured me at the time that was not the case and the balancer had been properly torqued. "It wasn't going anyplace" is what the service manager told me.
Well, here I am 5 months later with a loose balancer. I hope no damage was done by running the motor that way. I gotta find a new dealer.

The problem does sound like a balancer issue. The belts do not jump off alignment w/o a reason and the reason is almost always the balancer. And yes the balancers have been known to cause issues once they are removed and reiinstalled, unless they pin the crank during reinstallation.

The issue is the balancer bolt coming loose and the balancer falling off or nearly falling off because it comes into contact with the steering rack before it can completely come off.
