Problem with shifter!! HELP
I installed my c6 shifter on my 2000 coupe on Sunday, at 1st everything seemed fine.. but the more i drove it the crazier it is to get back in 1st.. like when i go to shift it back into 1st it like locks, it doesn't want to go back in 1st.. im starting to worry and think something is wrong.. anyone have any ideas?
oh boy. I knew it could not be that easy. Try to see if it happens when it is not on, then see if when the car is on but not moving if you can still get in and out of gears.
I would then see if the problem happens when the car is cold or when it is warm. At least this is a start to narrow when the problem happens.
If it was the locking pin I would suspect it would happen all the time so if the car is off and there are no problems then we can eliminate that.

it also gave me a similiar problem going to 5th.. noticed on the parkway on the way home
I was just playing with the car..
When the car is off and ebrake up i can go through the gears fine.
When the car is started AND NOT moving it seemed fine as well.
I just seemed to notice it when driving around town today... tomorrow morning I will go out test it when im moving and the car is COLD (when i 1st leave my driveway)
and I'll also keep driving and once its warm and see if it only does it when the car is warm AND I have been driving for a WHILE.

The car has 33k on her.. It did not do this at all with the stock c5 shifter.
It started happening 3 days after installing.
Also this morning as I went to go out.. the car will only stay in 3rd and 4th.. it wont go in 2nd or 1st.. My guess is something is not aligned right, since 1st and 2nd are ont he same "track" ( just throwing it straight down from 1st - 2nd ) Bob is coming over my house after work and we are going to take it apart? Any suggestions on what to look for?
I PMed Patches and sent me some info on what to make sure everything should be tightened to and also to attend to what parts.
There is a small plastic "cup" that goes on the bottom (steel ball-end) of the shifter that fits into the female part of the shift shaft (down in the tunnel).
My aftermarket shifter required that I transfer the original cup to the new ball-end prior to install.
If your new one required the same thing and you omitted it, the shifter will not be aligned correctly as you shift.

All the best.
I believe that the C6 shifter kit comes with everything since it was totally enclosed. I have seen that plastic piece for the hurst install, but since this is GMs part we did not change just the shifter, but the entire assembly (but maybe that piece is different between the C5 and the C6).
After reviewing some feedback from Patches I think it might be a torque issue or that the shifter assembly is not set properly.
The shame of it is that it worked 100% when we first drove it. It only got worse as more and more driving occured.
well hopefully we have some feedback for all tonight.

Bob:
I believe, unless the C6 shifter has an integrated plastic/nylon
insulator on the shaft ball, you have to have transfer the piece
as an aftermarket shifter would.
How tight or loose did the ball fit?
Hope you figure it out quickly, because my shifter arrived today
and I planned on it installing tonight.

...George
Hey George long time (btw are you stopping by Saturday???).
The C6 shifter kit is not like the hurst shifter. The hurst shifter is just the shifter so once you get the C5 shifter out then you need that plastic thing.
With the C6 kit it comes completely enclosed basically you take out the shifter and the shifter housing by removing the 3 #40 torq screws (not the 4 3/8 inch ones).
Here is a pic of the C6 shifter Kit
Here is a pic of the 4 bolts that I did not remove
Here is a pic of the 3 torq srews I removed

George you should come over my house to do it.. Maybe then we can make sure we BOTH have it right! I am about 30 min from flemington btw
Edit: If i call fichtner, will they know if I need that ball piece? Where did some of the other guys who posting here by theirs from?
Mike that plastic piece is at the end of your C5 shifter. I assume you sent that out already. WE can take the C6 shifter apart and see if it is there, but I am sure it is there otherwise Patches write-up would have said to move it over. Most people here are experienced with just replacing the shifter not the entire shifter housing.

Just got off the phone with Bob at Fichner and you do NOT reuse that ball piece, the only things you reuse are the screws and this little insalator piece, and obviously the boot.
