My starter (or solenoid) is shot, but I need to get the car up on ramps to get my jack under it to get the damn thing out...if i could push start it I'd be in business.
Also, anyone had to replace a starter? Cost? Hope I can find one local, as time is kind of critical due to the Cruise-in next week.
Like I wasn't already behind in preperations, now this crap. This whole week has sucked.
Turn ignition on, put in 1st gear, hold clutch in. Push the car, and once rolling at a good pace, pop the clutch and let the drivetrain turn the engine over. Car (hopefully) starts.
I have done this too. I pop it in 2nd gear. used rockauto.com for my alternator, got it the next day. The alternator is a pain to put in. You have to remove part of the exhaust to get it on. It would be much quicker to buy the alternator and have a local mechanic install it for you. It cost me $150. for the alt. and $150. for the install which took a couple of hours. Good luck!

Not applicable to automatics.
i used to do it in my old beater, i figured it would work on the vette but now i know. thanks y2k
I read an article not to long ago regarding push starts.
It advises using 2nd or Reverse as they are the same gearing.
Hopefully you'll never have to find out.
LOL! Man! You guys grew up with way too much money! I had a 68 VW that I had to park on top of a hill so I could start it every morning!
Same here. I "learned: when I had a 65 Chevy SS, that looked good sitting, but needed a little help with a push to get her going......(I wish I still had that car.)
Some cars won't start unless the clutch is in. Pop it and power is killed.
Huh? Do you mean that power is killed to the starter?
On the topic of push starting the C5 yep as said it works, LoL... I had a customer of mine I had seen at a car show we went to and he mentioned to me he was having an intermittent no crank. from the desctription sounded like the starter was on it's way out. well when he went to leave the show it happend lucky he was on a hill we pushed it to get it rolling he pop'd the clutch and go it going and I told him drive straight home, as he wanted to replace the starter himself. he did and replaced it all is good. So we basically saved him a tow, not to mention the embaressment of having a tow truck come to pick it up at the show.

I had to start my Lotus that way about half the time. These young pups need some real world experience.
