The power outlet in the ashtray area has stopped working in our '01. According to my reading of the manual, if it was a fuse other things would not be working too. This is the only thing in the car on the fritz. I would appreciate any suggestions on fixes.
The black cover( with the traction control/active handiling button) is really easy to remove, take that sucker off and test the wires connected. Mine had this same problem, it was because the power port was loose and it loosened the connection so it wasn't getting juice.

Are we talking about the same power outlet? The one I was referring to is directly below the radio and AC controls.
no, they weren't ...
it might be just the fuse .. check that first. Mine blew out and nothing else was wrong in the car .. i finally figured out the fuse and replaced it and all was well.

Sorry. I was multitasking and misread the post. Wrong info, but now you can fix that if it is ever a problem.
Yes I agree, check the fuse and you should be good to go
Check fuse 7 in the instrument panel fuse block. Per the GM wiring diagrams, this fuse feeds only the cigarette lighter outlet and the orange (hot at all times) cut lead that is used for connecting accessories such as a radar detector, and is located near the BCM and fuse block.
Per the diagram, those are the only feeds for this 20 amp fuse.
If the fuse is not blown, you might have to remove the outlet and replace it with a new one. Sometimes it can be as simple as the center (positive tang) being bent in too much from use, and this tang can be pulled out a bit without removing the outlet from the car; JUST MAKE SURE THE FUSE IS OUT WHEN DOING THIS, or you could blow the fuse.
Hope this helps.
One additional item. If it was used as an actual cigarette lighter, the ashes that form on the element can transfer over to the contact in the outlet preventing a good contact with an accessory plug. This layer of ashes can be removed with a pencil eraser; again be careful.
