Wife came home with me a Vector's orbital buffer/polisher and liquid NXT wax as a gift. Only problem is I heard horror stories about buffers before. I've also just done it by hand before. Question is. Will I ruin my paint? What should I be looking out for?

I don't know anything about the Vector, but I have a Porter Cable dual action polisher and it is fantastic and makes it virtually impossible to burn your paint. The Porter Cable is around $110-$120. Maybe you can graciously suggest an exachange, since your wife is really trying to do something nice for you. I think you'll find many of the guys and gals here on the forum love their PC polishers. If it's a random orbit buffer, you have nothing to worry about. Used one many times. Go for it. After a couple minutes, you'll be looking for cars to buff.

Thanks all
By the way, could your wife talk to my wife about gift giving?

JLA I'll ask my wife to get on that right away for you. She always thinks about me at the store maybe I can get her to pass that along to the other wifes. It is a random orbit but I wasnt sure about the Vector name. She said it cost her 60 and she got 3 cloth bonnets with it. I might take it back right now and get a PC. I've heard great reviews for them. Thanks for all your help. This place is the best.
personally i would do it by hand.. although the circular buffers are less likely to scratch the surface or leave marks i still prefer to do it by hand b/c i can control the amount of pressure against the surface and its not the same pad for the whole car... just my .02 cents

Don't take it back. She did a good thing. Buffing with a machine will yield marvelous results on a car that needs some serious attention like heavy oxidation or long time neglect. I don't use one right now because I am constantly cleaning, polishing and detailing.
With the random orbital you should be fine. I'm just not sure about the brand name. I have the Porter Cable and love it. I've used it on the Vette and the results were great. I had never used a polisher at all, but after having read so many good review of the PC I bought one. My wife is the same way. She's always thinking about me (and the car) when she's out shopping.
I used one of these this last weekend and it worked great! I did the meguiars 3 step process and it was amazing! It took ALL of the swirls out of my black paint! NO FEAR man go for it. On trick to remember: always always keep the surface of the polisher flat against the paint. Never tilt it! Tilting is the only way you are going to swirl.

I agree. An orbital buffer vibrates. You couldn't burn through the paint if you tried to. A rotary buffer is what you have to worry about.

I've been using a P.C. Random Orbital for about 15 years. I've never had a problem and would never go back to hand application again. Why would you?
With the buffer you get a much more even, thin application. These two things - even application and a thin layer are the keys to having an easy time with the removal.
Most folks who complain about wax being hard to remove are really complaining about putting too much on in the first place.
Well all I just got done doing the car. Used 2 coats of NXT, and man does it look great. It's too dark for pics but I will take some in the moring. All went great.
