Maintenance Schedule

Default Maintenance Schedule

I looked at the back of the owner's manual on my 2000 Coupe and it basically shows only oil changes and air filters throughout the first 100,000 miles. I have a manual trans, so I don't need to change the fluid as mentioned for autos at 50K under certain conditions.

Is the manual ultra conservative about what needs to be maintained? 100,000 miles sounds extreme for spark plugs, are there any omissions here?

Also, the inspector who checked my IM said that the transmission is rear mounted and uses automatic transmission fluid. I confirmed this in the manual. Is this the first of it's kind? This sounds bizarre to me.

Manual transmissions have always been easier. Where have you been? Think about it for a second, automatic transmissions are much more complicated internally and require cleaner fluids.

I knew that manual transmissions are easier to maintain. You may have misread my post, as I did not question this. I mentioned only that I don't need to worry about this since I have a MN6.

I was surpised however that the manual transmission in the C5 uses ATF and had questions about the items that the schedule may have left out.

I have a 2000 Coupe and I think that the Owner's Manual calls for more then oil & air filter changes in the first 100k. Don't neglect important things like your rear end. I think the book recommends that service at 30k...I wouldn't go beyond 20k myself. Although the manual tranny doesn't absolutely require service in the first 100k, it is very easy to do and very much worth doing sooner. Dexron III ATF for your 6-spd manual. I believe in the Manual and not what the knucklehead dealers recommend, however, I personally enjoy working on my Vette and my Vette thanks me all the time.

I stand corrected. You are right. Just looked in my Manual and oil & air filter changes are pretty much it till 100k. Yikes!

Okay I understand now. But if you are looking for more information than what is in the owners manual (of which the information in there is correct), you could get a Helm's service manual. It probably has more information than you will ever need.

If it has not been done before, I would go ahead and change the coolant at a minimum. It is 5 years or 100K miles. Just did mine late last year. You may want to change all the other fluids too (brake, power steering, rear differential, tranny) but that is up to you. Obviously check the hoses and belts. In addition, many forum members report that the pucks on the spark plugs are not lasting 100K miles, so you may want to pull a few and see just how they look.

Does anyone have a good write-up on how to change each of the fluids? I need to do the changes (54k miles)
