2000 Differential Leaking (2nd time) UPDATE See last post
At 20K miles the drivers side differential side cover began a small drip. Chevrolet replaced the side cover, O ring, sealant etc. Now almost one year to the day (42K miles) it's leaking again in the same spot. I'm taking it back in friday. Is there a "magic" fix for this problem that they don't know about? Thankfully I have a GMPP warranty, but it's still a hassle.

Yes, there is a magic fix. GM now has part numbers that has fixed the problem for me. Some of the early fixes did not last. Your dealer has the parts to fix it this time.

Mine has had problems three times for this. Last time I took it in they put in one of the revised seals and so far it has not leaked. Hope you can get it fixed because it is a PITA to have to keep doing this.
For those that have had the differential leak, what was the mileage on the car when it started. I am just about to turn 17,000 miles on my 02 and the rear is dry with no sign of any leak.
I've had mine done 4 times.. The last time, not only did they put new side cover w/seal, they also installed a new axle. Its been less than a year, no leaks. Milage has only been 4400. This problem has hit all years of C5s. Have two friends with 04s both needed done. Mine started at 7000 miles. Now have 18400. Thankfully, its been the only pia that I've had. Good luck tc

I just came across an interesting take on this problem that I haven't seen or heard before. I too have the leaking left diff seal. It's in the shop as I type this being fixed. The shop owner suggested that I add an exhaust pipe heat shield (a heat resistant sleave) that laces to the over axle pipe to further protect the new seal. He explained that road course racers seem to have the most problems with the seal not holding up. Quite possibly due to the heat from the over the axle exhaust pipe deteriorating the seal. I'm no Tech but for $40 it sounded good to me to help prevent it from leaking in the future like so many others have experienced. Especially since the diff seal didn't start leaking until after I replaced the stock exhaust with an aftermarket system (may have been a coincidence). We'll see if it does any good, but like I said $40 seemed like a cheap insurance policy.
Update Took the car in for a look. Sent me home until Tuesday. They said there's a serious problem within the case. The left shaft is a bit sloppy and taking out the seal. They're going to remove the differential, tear it down, and either order new parts (probably bearings etc) or see if a new differential is an option. They said probably 4 0r 5 days start to finish. They're providing me a loaner (not a C6 bummer) until the work is completed. All of this will be covered by my GMPP warranty Otherwise it would probably cost a pretty penny! Seems strange for a car that's never seen a strip, or x-cross.

My 2000 had this fixed under factory warranty. I have a friend with a 98 and he just had his fixed for at least the 3rd time. Common problem unfortunately. Good luck.
