I would, if it starts leaking it could cause a lot of damage to your car and wallet.

How old is the battery? I'm assuming it's kinda old...
my opinion is one of preventive maintenance I wouldn't wait for a problem, who knows where you would be when the battery finally gives up. Like I said just my opinion

I have a 2000 with 34k on the clock. I changed out my Delco for an Optima proactively at about 30k miles. Then I had some body work done and I was shown where the previous battery had leaked. For my $, it's well spent insurance.

I wouldn't spend the money on something you don't need yet. No matter how cheap of insurance it is. Just watch the battery closely. For all you know it may last another 5 years easy and if you use a battery maintainer is could last longer.

In model year 2001, GM started installing the newer AC-Delco Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries in the C5 at the factory. The AGM batteries are much less likely to leak than the older non-AGM AC-Delco side post batteries the factory installed in prior model years. (The Optima red and yellow top batteries many here buy as replacement batteries are also of AGM design.) In model year 2004, GM went to an AC-Delco top post lead acid battery in the C5 due to a number of premature failures they were seeing in the AC-Delco AGM batteries.

If your battery is an AGM type, you shouldn't needlessly worry about leakage. Here's a C5 Tech Tip that tells how to tell if your factory AC-Delco battery is an AGM battery:

1997 - early 2001 Battery Acid Leakage Issue

Hope this helps.

With the history of leaking batteries in these cars, I would get the stock one out soon and put in something like an Optima. I switched mine out when there was only about 15K on the car and have not regretted it since - if only for the peace of mind.

Mine leaked at 4 years old and I was watching for leaks. It only took me 4 hours to clean, neutralize, and repaint the frame. So I went back with Optima Red. Hope it works out as reliable.

Depends on its age, but i'd say you are on borrowed time.

I agree. I have been on that page with a leaky battery. Fortunately, I caught mine before there was any damage. However, I have a friend who had some serious issues with a leaky battery. He also spent some serious bucks getting it fixed.

Default New Battery?

It's like a ticking time bomb. Get her out of there. It may look good on top, but these things have their own way of leaking, ie, through the small vents etc. Speaking from experience. Good luck.
