I have considered HUD a must have in searching for the right car, and will pass up any without it. If you can install it for $300, I can change my outlook.
Experiences please.
Yes this is true. Order parts through Fred Beans. There is also a harness that you will have to get elsewhere. With the harness, the cost is probably $325 or so. There are a lot of people on this forum that have done this mod. Lot's of helpful links. PM me for more information.
It was a must have when I was looking for my vette but now that I have it I barely use it. Most of my driving is done in daylight hours and with the sun beating down and the sun glasses (polarized) on I can barely see it. I think it is because my glasses are designed to reduce glare and the HUD in itself uses a glare to reflect the display.
If you used non-polarized sunglasses instead, you would not have this problem.
But, I am what you would call a gadget guy, I think it adds to the cool factor. Peple in the car withy you cannot see it. But, you can use it as a safety thing as well. Every second you take your eyes off the road, something may come into your lane, or you may veer into someone elses' lane. Not a prob if you have your head up.
Like the chap said above, it you drive it like it was stolen, get hud some kinda way and don't look back.
P.S. At night, the gauges bug my eyes. I turn all interior lights off and just have HUD on.

This is my third car with HUD since 1998...2 Grand Prix and now my '04 CE coupe. It was a must on my current car....keeps me focused on the road and relative speed at the same time!

HUD critical - probably not. But it is a very useful option to have and after owning three cars with the HUD, I doubt I would like the car as much without it.
Automatic Vert, turn my HUD off most of the time, I don't see a need for it. Plus, I am 6'4" and my comfortable driving setup doesn't allow for a perfectly clear HUD viewing path through the steering wheel. If I had a stick, I could see where HUD would be nice.
I have HUD and rarely use it. I sit pretty low, and the speedo is positioned nice and high in the dashboard, so a quick glance at it doesn't take my eyes off the road for long.
When I do use it, I only display the speed, as I quickly discovered while driving at night that all the info up there will obstruct one's view of the road......and BAMBI! I do better than half my driving at night.
Can't really say I care for the effect of the sun hitting the HUD at just the right angle and displaying ALL the segments on the windshield at full brightness, either!

I installed it in my '98 pace car for around $300.00
