For the last couple of months my 04 Z has had this musty smell that would come and go. I suspected water was getting in somewhere but could not find it. Last month I installed insulation in the trunk area to help cut down noise. The musty smell got so bad last week that I took the car to the dealer. What they found was unbelievable. In the bottom of each storage compartment were holes that were left by the factory when the panels were pulled from the machine that made them. So all this time, every time I would drive in the rain, the storage compartments were becoming soaked. The water would drain back out the holes they came in. When I put the insulation in, it was trapping the water and causing the smell in the carpets. They say it will take about 2 days to fix and clean/replace the carpets. Mechanic said this was the 4th '04 vette he has seen with this problem.

Thanks for the info, haven't driven in rain yet, but here in FL the likelyhood is high. I'll check it out to make sure I don't have the holes and if so cover them up..Hope things dry out good, make sure you don't get any mold in the carpet to cause health issues.
Thanks for the tip, I will be checking that tonight.
The holes are located at the very bottom of the storage compartments. There is some machine grooving around them. Mine had 2 in the center compartment and one each in the 2 side compartments.

How would you know if there is mold. After cleaning, if mold is still there, would you smell it? I already told them if it still has that musty smell, I would not accept the car like that.
I haven't had that problem with mine yet although it hasn't seen a lot of rain. Can you see the holes from underneath the car? I know that my '00 Vette had a musty smell sometimes, especially when I ran the AC.
Thankfully I didn't have that problem on my '04, even though this was one of the wettest years in S. California history. Regardless, thanks for sharing the information so that others can be aware.

I am sure you can see the holes from the bottom. I could see the pavement below in mine.
Thanks for the good advice Rattler. Just came home and checked my '04 Z. Sure enough, one in the center and one on each side (though I don't think the side ones actually went all the way through, but I couldn't tell).
Got a nice black oem-style plug for the center one with clear silicone for protection, and siliconed the side ones as well. Took about 5 minutes total.
It's really overkill with my car because it will never see rain, but on the off-chance I get caught, at least I won't have soaked carpets to dry out along with a full detailing job to do!
My 99 FRC the front carpet on both sides gets wet when it rains or when it goes through a high pressure wash. Any ideas, this is really really bugging me and i cant find the problem ???
OK.... just finished my sound proofing and sure enough, center one had a small hole. As said above, I could see all the way through. The side compartments had holes but I couldn't get a probe to go through.
Small hole, may be 3/16's.... don't see how very much water could get in there. But, you never know....
Not sure, but this (holes on the storage compartments 'bottoms') many be common to other years.
My '99 has them, as did my '97, '98, '00 & '01. I believe these were OEM 'desired' to allow exit of fluids from the trunk areas (should someone spill something is my take on the reason).
When doing MikeMercury's insullation process I covered them. In no cases have I had any issues (I.e., musty smell) with that process accomplished.
I do not carry anything liquid in the trunk, so I believe I am safe from the OEM original reasons for these holes.
