Default Warning C5, Possible Fire

I am an insurance agent and had a wierd call the other day from one of my insured's. He owns a 2002 vert. He had taking the wheel center cap off and set it on the passinger floor for some reason. He had the top down and went for a drive. He started smelling smoke and found that his glovebox had started on fire. What had happened is the sun was hitting the center cap and reflecting it onto the glovebox. He had to put it out with his hand. I must have to do with the concave of the cap. Yes, it is covered. I thought I would pass it along.

My daughter is a physics major at Notre Dame. She looked at center cap and she said the is is very possible. She said that it is the reverse of a piece of glass.

Kind of like the problem with C1's at shows. The flat chrome air cleaner assembly reflects the sun onto the underside of the hood and can cause problems. You will usualy see a towel on the assemblies at the car show, just to keep the reflections down.

In theory this is possible. If bright sun if focussed properly you can start a fire.

Who remembers starting fires with magnifying glasses when they were kids?

I have also heard of a similar problem with clear leaded glass in doors and windows. This glass is not flat, but rather has a curve to it. There have been documented cases of sunlight hitting this type of glass in front doors, shining into the house and starting a fire!

My question is why someone would remove one center cap, put it on the floorboard of his Vette, and go out for a drive without putting it back on? This guy isn't also a member of the Flying Roof Club, is he??

I dunno... The dash and the glove box are by design pretty heat resistant. Had you said it lit up a piece of paper or a bottle of grain alchohol it would be a more believable claim than lighting up a heat resistand dash component. The Insurance company should do a test....

The claim is only $350.00+/-, (glove box only) I will just sent him a check after he sends me the bill.

Is that worth a claim? Does he have a deductable? I only ask cause I am in jersey and a claim like that would cost me at least double that in raised rates!

He has no deductible. It will not increase his premiums. He has not had a claim in 6 years. I felt since he has paid insurance premiums for the past years, he should turn it in.
