Forgive my ignorance, I'm new here. How does one go about this recall? What years did it include? I keep reading about it as being common, but no details.
If you have a manual transmission C5, forget the recall and buy the CLB (Column Lock Bypass) unit. The recall for manual vehicles will only prevent the column from locking up when you're driving - it will do nothing to prevent it from locking up while at rest.
I THINK that automatic cars beginning in '01 had this problem fixed, but don't quote me on that. Perhaps another member here has more insight into the matter.

Welcome to the forum...we were all new once Go to the Tech Page and read the sticky at the top on column lock. The best way to get info is to do a search for the topic of interest...
I bought my Vette used and had no idea if the recall had been performed or not...that is until today. I took my 6-spd Vette in to have the A/C serviced (Summer is right around the corner). The service writer gave me a printout of the service history for my vehicle. Sure enough, the recall has been done. Am I totally screwed now? If the dreaded lock happens to me, will GM fix it for free (including the tow)?
I've read once the recall has been performed, a CLB will not work. Are there any other options?

Actually the recall for the 6 speeds will cut your fuel if the column lock fails.
I have an MN6 and 4 recall notices so far...it ain't going in for them to screw up.
My '01 MN6 is still at the dealership (since Monday) due to column lock. I ordered a CLB on Monday night after doing a search here and reading all the horror stories. Trust me, you don't want to be stranded anywhere.....GET THE BYPASS .... NOW!

Check with your dealer and they can tell you if the recall has been done on your car (assuming you bought it used). I had the recall done, but I also installed a column lock bypass (purchased at Thunder Racing). Not had a problem.
Am I correct that the CLB should be installed no matter what year C5 you have? I ask because I'm wondering if GM may have fixed this problem by the time my car was made in June of 04? Dan

They eliminated the steering lock in the A4's, but since you have a 6 speed you are still vunerable for the failure. You need the CLB.
