Ive done some reading on the comparision between the 2 different Kuhmos for our cars, ASX and MX. My car is a daily driver for me and I do a good bit of highway travel. I drive it in the rain more often than I would like. I do not autoX/roadrace and I haven't been to the drag strip yet, but it is not ruled out of a pass or two occuring. Id say on a scale of 1-10, my driving aggressiveness would be a 6. I like have fun around curves but I do go around burning my tires and rarely turn off traction control/active handling. Which of the Kuhmos would you say is the best for my needs. I am also on a budget!
You sound like me. I have the ASX's and love em. Good value. They can be limited in the performance department, but that is only if you try to drive to the edge of the car's/tire's ability. For semi-aggressive driving, they should be OK.
I may have to go with the ASX due to life. I have had my C5 since late July of 04, and it had 14,100 miles on the clock at that time. Now, it has 31K All this because of a 100mile round trip to school at least 2 times a week, but this summer I will be graduating and maybe I can find a job that isn't that far away.
Well, I am replacing my rear tires tomorrow and I had my fronts replaced at SEARS with the KUMHO ASX a couple of weeks ago. I understand your question and because the tire guy I deal with is very honest with me, I touched on the ASX MX issue and was told that the MX is a better tire for gripping (if you like to play a bit) and the ASX is a good solid all season tire. I went with the MX on the rear for the soul purpose of the off the line gripping issue, because I do take the car to the track from time to time and run it on street tires. Yes, the ASX grips well too, but that is one of the biggest difference between the two.
A BIT OF HISTORY:
KUMHO is not a bad tire, found out some other news about this maker over the weekend at the track. KUMHO is a KOREAN company that primarily deals with TRUCK tires (SEMI and big trucks) and the company often has a great deal of extra resources in the building that the tires are made of, so they have taken a small area of the building and started designing these performance tires and with great return. The company never excepted to make any real money on this and charges very reasonable prices, because they are not buying extra goods to make the tires. With this said, the tire (KUMHO) is propular with great ratings. The ASX is actually a 4 star tire on TIRE RACK and that is out of five stars and all of the other brands average 3 stars.
I know that I have been running KUMHO tires on my last two performance cars and the results are GREAT! I stand behind KUMHO 100%.
I'm very pleased with my MX's. I'll probably get another set once these are done. Decent track performance for an everyday tire. I don't mind if they wear a little faster, considering the price.
MX uses softer tire compound so it grips better than ASX. The trade off being much lower wear rating.
Also MX is not all season. It's purely a summer tire. I have all wheel drive on my A4 and I still slide all over the place with MX's even in very light snow.
ASX is all season hi-performance tire. MX is Max performance summer tire.
I just replaced the GY runflats with the ASX today and man is the car QUIET! It's been said many times over but the difference really is night & day. The ride is also smoother (almost cushy), no more harsh impact jolts over bumps & expansion joints. So far I love 'em! For the price ($522 delivered from Discounttiredirect) they're simply awesome. I highly recommend them for a daily driver.

I recommend the ASX - more confortable, quieter, and higher wear rating but sacrificing ultimate grip.
For those of you who need an all season tire and are considering the ASX, you might want to check out the Pirelli P Zero Nero M&S instead. It costs a little bit more but it's well worth it. Check out Tirerack's review on this tire vs the Kumho ASX and you'll see they preferred the Pirelli.
I've only got the Pirellis up front for now (still running the runflats in back, but will buy Pirellis when these wear out) but I can say I'm completely amazed at how well these tires corner for all seasons! The previous owner had 275-40-17 Eagle F1s up front and I wanted to go back to a 245-45-17, plus have something better suited for snow, so I switched to the Pirellis. I noticed no loss in cornering! The F1s that were on there were almost brand new too, so it's not like I went from very old worn out tires to new ones either.
The Pirellis handle heavy rain very well (the day I got them on we had the heaviest rainstorm I've ever driven in during my entire life!) and they got me through a Toronto winter with no problem either. They seem to have a pretty good tread life too, I've put over 15k on them and they don't look very worn down at all.
They are pretty loud and their ride are more on the firm side.
MX are designed with dry/wet grip and price as priorities, almost everything else comes second.
But you just can't beat it's performance/price ratio.
I disagree. It depends what you are comparing to. If a person is still on the Run-Craps, then the MX will be much quieter and will give a much smoother ride as well.
Any opinions on the MX's in the quietness/ride department?
I have a set of MX's in the 245/45/17 size all around on my Mustang GT. I just dumped the GY Gatorbacks that came new on the car from the factory. They were noisy during the last third of their life and wore out in average time - ~24K mile.
The MX's are an excellent tire. They are quiet and have great dry traction. Also, a couple of nights ago I had to drive in a drenching storm and the wet traction of the MX's was quite good - I went full speed through huge puddles with no problem and it held the road well with no squirminess on curves at speed. I am very happy with them, especially considering their price.
I have the stock Run Flats on my '98. The noise from them is really annoying. While I'm not expecting miracles, I'm hoping for some improvement. I did the usual research and settled on the MX's.
I'm just waiting for my new wheels to come in. I can't wait. Gotta go.. off to check my FedEx tracking number again.
