Default XM Commander in C5

I've seen the Commander installed behind the ashtry/lighter compartment lid in C5's. Has anyone here done the installation themselves? If so, I'd like to talk to you.

My biggest question is, will it fit without modifying the area behind the lid? I image you must pull out the ash tray and ligher but do you have to do any other cutting?

I'm getting VERY close to getting XM. My choice is the Commander since I want it permanently in the Vette (and hidden). Also with XM's current special you get a free Roady with a 3mo. $7/mo additional subscription. Perfect for me as I have two road cars.

Any pertinent info on installing a Commander behind the ashtry/ligher compartment lid would be appreciated.

Thanks!

The XM Commander control unit will fit in the ashtray compartment without modification. I had to pull the ashtray, and used double sided tape. I use the remote to change channels, so the double sided tape is more than enough support. The door closes just fine. I can still slide in the lighter also.

I have mine velcro'd in. The velcro must be too thick because the door doesn't close completely.

How thick was the tape you used? Was it that thin stuff that comes with the radio?

There is a small tab on the back side of the ashtray cover that you may need to trim down. Then it should close. If not, you may have to tuck the wires a little better or remove some velcro.

Tape I used was about 1/8 inch thick.

I originally installed my Commander in the ash tray. It fit perfectly and worked fine. However, the display is nearly impossible to read while in 5th gear. So, I removed it and replace the entire Bose system and replaced the head with an Alpine with XM built-in. Much better!
