Right know I have a big traction issue. I have not been able to get a good launch off the line with my run flats(little less than 1/2 tread). If I hit the throttle to more than about a 1/3 off the line I leave very impressive black streaks . A friend asked about putting the car in 2nd and punching it off the line..... his thought being to take some of power away and stop the wheel spin. I'l try just about anything once. I ended up leaving twice the the rubber as before. Which was cool in its own right. My quarter run was nearly the same launching in 2nd as in first. Any one else try a 2nd gear lauch....
I'm looking at going with 315 Pilot Sport PS2 on 11 inch rims to help, what do you think.

Ok......dumb question from an MN6 guy......
What's the difference? Even if you put an auto in "2" it's still really in 1st isn't it? I know with the old TH350/400's you could get a TransGo or B&M full manual shift kit and do that.....but on an electronic trans???? Aren't you still in 1st?

No. If you put it in first, that's where it stays until you shift it to 2nd or drive. Take off in 2nd and it stays in second untill you shift it to drive or overdrive. Take off in drive, and it will go from first to second to drive., defending on cars rpm.
you sure? I know in previous cars if you put it in 2nd from a dead stop, you still start in 1st, it'll shift to 2nd...but then will stay in 2nd until you shifti t

3rd-Inf is correct. It stays in 2nd gear no matter what you do. If you are at a complete stop, shift into 2nd and move off - you will move off in 2nd gear.
OD & 3 will go into 1st, 2nd 3rd (automatically) and 1st will stay in first until redline then you will hit the rev limiter.

Those were the old days, now you put it in 2nd and it starts in 2nd. My chevy truck is the same way

p.s. Mike Mercury - Impressive 60foot times!
Thanks dude......now I got it. That's pretty cool actually......my '00 GTP doesn't do that.....it's in 1st even even when put in 2nd. But then again.....it's FWD so who really cares.....
Its called a 2nd gear start. My truck has it and it really helps in snow.
when your shifter is in 2nd, from a dead stop your car /truck will give less torque to the wheels when starting off in second.
I never actually launched my vette in second, whats the fun in that.
2002 A4, factory run flats, 3.42 upgrade, Predator tune:
and factory TC as well. This is as good as it will ever get unless I go with a higher stall TC. And that will never happen as I am not a dragstrip type person.
My launching technique was learned from this forum. Powerbrake @ 1300rpm, at third yellow release brake and press down on accelerator. Not "mashing" the accelerator down; but taking it to the floor in about 1.5 seconds worth time.

Wierd. My 97 GTP would do a 2nd gear start. It was even talked about in the owners manual. It was recomended to use 2nd gear from a dead stop under low traction conditions like snow and ice.
