Hi guys. This is my first post. I'm in the market for a 98-00 Corvette and have a few questions that I hope you guys can answer.
The Corvette would be my primary vehichle, so how is it going to perform commuting to and from work each day? Not too far of a drive, like 40 miles round trip. One thing I'm wondering about is MPG?
Also, for any of you in your mid to late 20's, how is the insurance?
Thanks for any help. I look forward to joining the discussions once I get mine in the garage.
I'm in my early 30s and insurance went up $5 a month from a 2002 GTI. I do a very similar commute - 1/2 city 1/2 highway and get about 18-19 mpg. You will simply love this car.
21 here and my vette is my daily driver. its great for commuting. makes driving to and from work sooo much better!! i average about 19-21mpg around town, and 28-31 on road trips!
insurance is going to vary from company/state etc... i pay about $3000 per year.
good luck with your search!! feel free to ask as many questions as you need!! the forum is a great place with a bunch of great people!!!

That about sums it up. I'm just Late 30's. My premium is about 100.00 per month for the car. I can get as high as 23 or so MPG avg. for a work week if I baby it ....and as high as 32 on the highway on a long trip.
I am 30, and through state farm my Insurance is $1120 every six months for an 01 z06. with one ticket on my record. (93mph in a 70) By the way Radar detectors won't work against airplanes.
I'm in the same place as talon90. Late 30's, insurance is about $100 month which is $10 less than my 04 350Z I just sold. Reason? Fewer claims from Vette owners.
My fuel mileage is off to a great start. I filled my tank the day I got my car (5/29) and hit 1/4 tank yesterday (6/6). That's two weekends of running around and a M-F of daily 40 mile round trip work week.
look into getting a cheap car for bad weather days...
I have a 90 cutlass ciera that I picked up for under $1000 and it pays for itself in the savings from having multi car discount on insurance. Not to mention peace of mind when I know it is tucked away in bad weather.
I am 27 and I pay around $100/mo for both cars.
the mileage is just as good in the Vette as it is in my 2.5L 4 cylinder (if I am easy with the right pedal)

The C5 is a great car for a daily driver, unless you live in a place that gets a lot of snow. In my '00, I usually get 30+ mpg out on the highway, around 16-18 in town.
I bought my '99 black coupe brand new six years ago, and it has always been my DD. My commute is a little bit shorter than yours, but a C5 can easily be a DD with no problems. I would never have bought a C5 if I couldn't drive it every day. Car insurance rates vary from person to person. You can easily get a quote from any insurance company, even before you commit to a Vette. Good luck on your decision.
Nah! Forget it! You won't like it. Chicks hate them. They don't have any big red "R's" on the back, no coffee can mufflers. Nah! You young guys won't like them at all.
I had the same questions before I bought mine.
Now...
I drive my 04 Z06 every day to work.
I live in the northwest so weather can be wet but still less problems in wet weather then any other car I have had. (I do not drive in the snow and ice around here)
MPG is about 19-20 back and forth and 30ish on trips. (mileage may very with WOT)
Insurance is actually less then many other cars (350z, WRX, GTO) due to the high level of safety built in to the car (active handling discounts apply) and the low level of claims.
Draw back to commuting in this car is the cup holder and the drive is always too short. (love to drive this car)
I may also think differently if I had stop and go with the 6 speed but I used to do that with a manual clutch and a 4 speed in my Nova.

My best advice would be to get a beater car to use as your primary on insurance. It may save on gas, it will keep the miles down on your Vette and you should get a discount on ins. Don't get me wrong, the Vette is A LOT of fun to drive every day and gets great mileage. I don't like spending all of my free time cleaning it, so it stays covered until a nice day or weekend. Good luck in your search and WELCOME to the forum.
26 years old here, my '01 costs me $80 a month in insurance. It isn't classified as my daily driver though (which lowered my insurance rates). It's listed as a pleasure car...despite the fact that during the summer months it's my daily.
Thanks for all of the info. I couldn't have hoped for any better reponses.
For those wondering, I live in Louisiana. I'm working in Jacksonville, FL for the next 2 weeks, so I have my eye on a few here. Much more selection than back home.

There was a huge difference in insurance for me if I kept my current car. Insurance agent said that most Vette owners that have 2 cars baby them and therefore don't drive them to the grocery store, work everyday, etc. That is why the insurance was much cheaper vs having the vette as an only car.
Just make sure if you insure it as a second car, the insurance policy does not limit the miles you can put on it in a year.
