Default 01 vs 02-04

Newb here, hows it going?

I am interested to find out what the differences GM had to take to get the add'l 20hp that Chev got these model years. Sorry if this is a reposted question (I know it probably is), however I am going to begin looking soon and cost is a factor, therefore if I can save a little going 01 vs 02, but get the same result in the end of the mods I would go that way.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Here is some more info:
2001: http://www.z06vette.com/01.php
2002: http://www.z06vette.com/02.php
I ended up going with an 01 and I love it!
Minuses for an 01:
1. Possible Oil Consumption issue. Technical Service Bulletin is out on this. May need re-ring. I have no issues on my Z06.
2. Slave Cylinder issue. TSB on this as well. After hitting the first 3 gears quickly, fluid can overheat and cause no clutch pedal situation briefly. I have this issue and still need the dealership to replace. I did buy the GM Protection Plan extended warranty (a must if you can get it!)
3. Some options are not available; Heads-Up display, Electron Blue (replaced Speedway White in 02), memory package, and a couple extra ones.

The price difference between the 01 and 02's for 20 hp more was not enough incentive to go with an 02. At 385hp, the 01 still gets up and goes! And there are plenty of mods to do to get you over 405hp. Of course, the 02+ guys have also done those mods so they are over the "425" mark.

Good luck!

Well, you could add an open element filter (Halltech, Blackwing, etc.), dyno tune, long tube headers, high flow cats, etc. Just to get things started.

One slight correction. My 2001 Z06 has the memory package.

I am not an authority on the engine mods GM made. I'll bet there is a whole thread on it somewhere. Even so, here is what I have been told.

The 405's have a different MAF, Different valves, and a different cam. There are other differences. However, I am told the majority of the additional hp came from the cam and associated changes.

My bad. I guess I am in need of a "memory" upgrade.

As for the Heads Up...you can always add it.

what would those mods be?

The best part of having an 01 is not having a fender badge that states 400 less hp than I am making.

You can add HUD in an 01 yourself for about 500 bucks..

A lot of forum members have done it and said it was not hard at all..

It's one of my next mods on the list..

shocks were changed (I believe only the rear) for the 02-04. 2001 has a rougher ride and are not as easy to use as a daily driver as the 02-04.

The usually is not a hugh diff in price bet the 01' and 02's. That why I bought the 02.
