Default HUD Install this weekend!

I've got all the parts thanks to Fred Beans and Josh.

What's the average time it takes to do this?

Putting into a Y2K coupe.

It should not take more than 5 to 6 hours to do it. There are only 3 things that you need to be very careful about.

1. Extra patience with the whole project (especially taking the glovebox out)
2. Drilling holes for the HUD projector mounting (Right Angle Dremel Tool is a must. Also, you only have one chance to do this so dont screw it up. The plastic you are drilling into is very soft)
3. Cutting the hole in Dash Pad. (Royal PITA).

Goodluck with the project!

Don't forget about not laying the speedo on its side! (so I've heard)

I also have a Y2K that I installed a HUD. It took about 4 hours. My kit came with double back tape so I did not need to drill the holes. There is a thread here on the fourm that details the install instructions. I agree with "KNOWME" cutting the dash pad is a PITA. Just be careful when you cut, there's little room for error. I love the HUD. Good luck with the install.

I did mine about a month ago and its a piece of cake. Just take your time and don't rush it. The glove box is a pain in the Azz to get out more because its just ackward and a tight fit to work in. I absolutely agree with point number 2 also. You can't drill without the right angle attachment. Also 4 hands are better than two to lift the dash out and back in. Get some help. Good luck.....the HUD is great.

I have been looking at doing this "upgrade". What parts are needed? I have looked at Fred Bean's Specials, and they have:
Projector
Bezel
Switch
Anything else needed? Does the projector include the wiring harness? If not, where is a good source for the harness? Thanks.

Installed a HUD in my '98 last summer. It took me about 12 hours, but, I'm old and slow and probably had 1 or 2 beers too many during my many rest breaks. I did the install w/o help, although an extra pair of hands would have been helpful during removal/installation of the dash. You'll love it. It's the coolest add-on I've installed in my car. Good luck.

Lot's of good advice here. I've done this myself. Be prepared, take your time, and try to have a nice clean area with plenty of room to lay things out as you remove them.
I especially agree with the part about removing your dash pad and getting another person to help there. It's not absolutely necessary, but I would recommend it. Also, lay a towel or blanket over your steering wheel when you are doing the dash pad removal, and remember the old saying about "measure twice, cut once". I think I measured three or four times before I cut, and everything worked out fine. You're going to love the results.

Josh and his instructions are great.
...took me a long time but I also painted the gauge bezels with the Krylon silver leafing pen (ala Josh).

I used a dremmell to cut the pad (and MANY bits)...too small at first and expanded until the bezel fit. I didn't glue the bezel. Instead I cut the bezel legs shorter and used screws and washers.
...and I took the dash out without removing the glove box...but I don't recommend that.
Make sure you have a nice clean covered working surface for your dash...and continue to clean it as needed during the dash cutting exersice. You don't want the top of the dash getting marred by debris on the table surface.

Good luck...go slow...it'll be great.

Doesn't HUD require the special windsheild for projection?
