I don't think they make them in C5 sizes yet. The C6 runflats will not have the distance capibility of the current C5 runflats. I believe the new runflats will only be able to go 50 miles instead of 200 miles in an emergency like the current C5 runflats can. The C6 tires are supposed to have improved handiling and quieter operation. Another benefit to the new C6 tires...... 18'' & 19'' sized runflats.
I read/heard that the C6 run flats from Goodyear were redesigned to address some of the C5 runflats complaints. I don't believe they are available for the C5 yet, but I think Goodyear is thinking about making them in the C5 size.
Actually the C6 RFs will go 100 miles AT ZERO PRESSURE. The point being, if you had 5 psi of pressure in your tires the max range would be more than 100 miles. Any pressure at all will extend the range.
Sorry for the caps but there is a misconception that the max range on RFs is maximum, period. That is NOT true. It is maximum only at zero tire pressure.
That being said, if you get a puncture (ie. you notice on tire is constantly less pressure than the others) then the range for that tire is won't be much less than if it didn't have a slow leak. In fact if you keep it at 30psi or so by checking it everyday you can drive and drive and drive.
Goodyear signficantly redesigned the RFs this year making the outer edges softer and the overall tread compound softer with the primary goal of reducing road noise. They also changed the tread pattern a bit with to reduce tire noise even further.
If you didn't already know, the reason for most of the noise in a stock C5 is the road noise created by the hard EMT edges rolling over the pavement designed into the tires that is being transmitted from inside the tire to the wheel/hub/axle/drivetrain, etc. This is why its hard to quiet the car down because, the vibrations from the noise created within the tires is being transmitted to/thru the entire structure of the car.
This uncomfortable noise to some is not external noise like someone's exhaust but a resonance that travels through the drivetrain.
No, Goodyear isn't using the new design in tires for the C5s to my knowledge but you could try contacting Customer Service at Goodyear and see then let us all know.
I wonder too, maybe the front C6 tires will fit a stock rear C5 rim. I don't know.
Following is a response I got from Goodyear customer service a # of months ago re: new runflats in C5 sizes.
"Thank you for contacting our web site and for your interest in Goodyear tires. We are looking at the possibility of bringing out the
older C5 tires in the C6 designs: but at this point no decision has been made.
Thank you for your thoughtful e-mail. I have forwarded it to our high performance tire department. We appreciate the feedback."
When I contacted GY the answer I recieved was that they were not going to be available in C5 sizes because they do not believe there is a market for them. I told the customer service rep to check out this site and that might help them make a decision.
The new style GY runflats would be great for my Zo6 since they are reportedly lighter and quieter. I need them in 17 & 18 sizes. Anybody listening ??????
