I have a 2000 A4 and I have developed a low grumbling/vibration type noise that appears to becoming from the drive train or exhaust. It only appears at low rpm when the trans is engaged. as soon as the rpm increase the noise disappears. when slowing done to 5 - 10 MPH the nosie reappears- while sitting still with the trans engaged, the nosie may be there or may not. Real strange. sounds like an exhaust vibration .Anyone experience this or have any thoughts? Thanks Duds.
I have the exact same noise, only happens when going along at idle in traffic or when coming to a stop. I have been trying to find the noise now for a while. Seems to be coming from the drivers side and can be felt and heard through out the car. First I thought it was the hatch rattling but still does it when hatch is open. Starting to lean towards drivetrain or suspension noise but to many possibilities to diagnose. Also 2000 A4
Do you also have a high speed vibration, around 70-80 mph, coming from the rear?

My 99 does that too. I've only had it a few months, so I don't know if it's normal or something I should be worried about. To me, it sounds like an exhaust rattle resonance. My car has the Ti exhaust on it, for what it's worth. I'll be watching this tread to see what others have to say...
I do not have the high speed vibration but it is interesting that the issue exists with other owners. It would be great to get some input from someone who had the problem and found a fix. Thanks for the input Duds
I had a similar problem with a 2000 A4, too. It was the catalytic converter on the driver's side. The baffles, or whatever they're callled, had broken loose inside and made this sound but only at idle or low speed. Once the exhaust volume rose, the noise would stop. Also, heard of an O2 sensor causing similar noises-again loose components in the sensor. Hope this helps.

This sounds interesting, because on mine the noise seems to be loudest after warming up and after driven for a long distance. Will have to check this out thanks.
